  • Sears router

    Sears router

Nice features for half the price of the higher end products. While I do think that DeWalt, PC, Milwaukee etc. are well made and worth the price they ask for the better names, I do not always have hundreds of dollars to make another purchase at any given time. The new Routers from Sears are certainly a huge step above the Skil and B&D offerings, at only a slightly higher retail. I love the soft start, PC compatable base for bushings, work light and noise level that is not as deafening as some. If...

  • Steel City Mortiser

    Steel City Mortiser

Just ordered and recieved the Steel City Benchtop Mortiser and wanted to put a quick review of it up. It's not the cheapest mortiser around at $289 plus shipping, but it feels like a quality piece for the price. I have to admit that this is my first mortiser so that may color my views. To start with, it's heavy, about 90 pounds, with a very solid cast iron base and fence. The DHL guy was good enough to unload it next to the garage so I only had to drag it a few feet into the garage to set it up...

    Hitachi SB 10Y 4 x 8 Belt-Disc Sander

The old 4 x 6 Ryobi was making sounds you don't won't to hear. Might have been the brushes, but that is usually a noiseless affair till the last breath before the vital signs cease to exist. 6 years or hard driving and $99 latter, not bad but not "just" what I needed. I looked at the Jet 6 x 9 for $399. Nice but the price was a bit much. I can't justify that much machine in my case with frequent, but still occasional use. I watched and waited for one to appear used.. but not in a 3 month perio...

Shop Fox W1677 3hp Cabinet Saw

Since so many of us are upgrading to bigger saws, I thought it would be helpful to provide a review of one possible alternative route. After deciding to go upgrade to cast iron, I shopped for contractor's saws, hybrid saws and cabinet saws. I eventually realized that I'd end up with a cabinet saw anyway, so why not skip the middle man? After reading lots of reviews and looking at saws in person, I decided on the Shop Fox or Grizzly 1023 (same saw) equipped with a Shark Guard. Full cabinet saw...

  • Harbor Freight Chisels

    Harbor Freight Chisels

I picked up a 6 piece Chinese Chisel set for $8.00 at Harbor Freight expecting to find I actually had a 6 piece gasket scraper set (1/4" thru 1 1/2"), but once I cleaned them up with some wet/dry sandpaper and glass (Scarysharp trick) and gave them a little hollow grind with a cool grinder I was delighted to find they work just fine and keep an adequate edge for what I was doing (softwood shaping). I wouldn't expect them to hold up under heavy pounding and abuse, but I was trimming some round tenons...

  • Jet JJ-8CS 8" Jointer

    Jet JJ-8CS 8" Jointer

I got this jointer at such a steal that I couldn't pass on it. I was thinking to go with the 8" powermatic, but went jet for 2 reasons. 1. Price that I got, 2. Handwheel control, which I like better on jointers. The jointer came in a large crate and a box. The box contained the stand and motor, and was roughly 100 lbs, the crate contained the jointer top and fence, at around 300 lbs. My rather large friend Steve and I managed assembly on our own. (actually Steve just helped move the top) I...

    Powermatic 3520B, 20" Lathe

It's big, heavy and has lots of functions, plus it runs quiter and smoother than any machine I have had. If you are considering a new lathe, hyou have to look at this one!
I have a full review of the 3520B at the link below with photos and a video.

    Sears 22114 Hybrid Saw

Sears 22114 First Impressions. 1.Packaging-Surrounded by a steel cage for shipment. a.No dents but several smudges on cabinet could not be removed. b.All parts were included-one bolt left over. 2.Assembly (accomplished alone) a.Instructions were good. b.One instruction referenced a figure number that did not exist but did not cause a problem. c.I thought cast iron wings would be tough to install, but turned out to install easily and lined right up with the holes drilled in th...

  • Jasper Circle Guide for routers

    Jasper Circle Guide for routers

I asked in the Tool Talk forum and at an Audio DIY forum about the best way to route nice circles for building speakers. Got some great replies and saw some honest ingenuity and home made jigs to accomplish this task. A few guys mentioned this Jasper Circle Guide and I purchased it at Parts Express. Set it up in no time and was cutting perfect circles up to 18" with no fuss and no fancy adjustments between size switches. Place your material on a backer, drill a 1/8" hole in the center through a...

  • GMC $39.95 Router Kit

    GMC $39.95 Router Kit

Wasn't sure where to put this but wanted to be sure it was seen. I purchased this at the bottom price of $39.95. There was at least one post on the forum that cited a problem with the bit rising and falling when the router was turned on. I wanted to be sure that mine did not have this feature. I guess I am satisfied with the purchase, but only because it was inexpensive. Had I paid full price I would certainly return this tool. Setting bit height is not very smooth and the scale to do this...

    Frued LU88R010

Purchased this blade 2 weeks ago when Amazon had them reduced. While I can't compare to a WoodWorker II, the blade performs very good for me. I recently ripped some 1" curly maple, paduak and tiger wood with no chattering, binding, burning and nearly no saw marks. It cuts through these woods like butter and crosscutting is even better. Absolutely no tear out (slowed down near the end). I was having a some problems with burning, especially with the padauk prior to intalling this blade. The ripping...

  • Powermatic's PM2000

    Powermatic's PM2000

I was lucky enough to get a pm2000 for christmas, and it's been an interesting upgrade, to say the least. The good: This saw is powerful, cutting through 3" red oak without any trouble. I've ripped, cross-cut and taper cut that stock for a table project I've been doing. The built in casters are a nice feature, nicer than a mobile base, as they retract entirely leaving the saw very stable. The riving knife design is truly inspired. The entire mechanism can be removed to allow for a cross cu...

It took me about 20- 30 minutes to get everything setup and that included the time to take the pictures. So The setup is very straight forward and easy to do. After I finished setting the unit up I tried changing out the belt to see if it was as easy as the manual implied. It definitely is It takes about a minute to make the change and a few seconds to test and adjust the tracking. Changing the disk is slightly more involved as you have to remove the guard which requires a screw driver but even with that it is still easy to do. ...
