I don't think it makes any difference to operation. I just commented it was aluminum because you said you tried to retrieve it with a magnet....

I'm talking about the 1/4" axle for the roller wheel. The one for the clamper is a steel spring roll pin.maybe about an 1/8th inch.

I seem to recall the roller pin was aluminum. No wonder your magnet wouldn't find it.

Fluorescent tubes
I was in the garage and notice one of my workshop lights had one tube out.

They tend to use LR44 batteries which are not all that expensive but they tend to go through them in a matter of a few months, when turned off.
After some measurements with my electronics gear, I found that the calipers use the same amount of power turned on or off... it appears the off button function is simply to turn off the LCD.
The apparent reason seems to be so that the unit will... -

The roller holder has a lot of stress and apparently breaks frequently. At least In terms of a twenty year saw life so far.

I think there were several. iterations of motors.
Jim is probably right you will get more consistent interchangability by taking the locker bracket...
