  • HF Combination square set

I got the Centech 4-piece combination square set HF#92471 for around 6-7 bucks. I think it was on sale for $6, a buck off the regular price. Having a decent Stanley Comb. Square, I wanted a protractor and centerfinder attachment. I figured for $6, how bad can it be?

Came in a wooden case which it turns out was the best part.
The fit and finish was awful. the metal was rough, the paint rough and peeling and the parts did not slide well at all. I guess the square and centerfinder move OK (locking screw was a little rough feeling), but the protractor took a superhuman effort to move (rotate) and the scale was all but unreadable, the scale was on one piece and the indicator marks on the other moving piece but they were on slightly different, non-parallel planes so the faint markings (hard to read except at a perfect incident light angle) required two perfect incident light angles to read. I.e. you can't read both at the same time. Rule Scale was stamped, not engraved, kind of low quality. At least the markings were in the correct place.
I kept the rule with the centerfinder and tossed the protractor and the square handle. I did not even bother to check if the square was at 90°.

The parts do interchange with other combination squares out there... the rules being simlar withthe locking groove in the same place.

The best part was the box, I eventually bought a used Starrett 4-piece set for around $60 (current new price around $140) and I keep it in the box!

There's no comparison to the Starrett set, which has impeccable finish and everything slides smoothly and very easy to read the engraved scales (protractor and rule). Even though the set is probably 30+ years old.

well, I posted the original review over a year ago. I never said the tools were not square or accurate, just that the user satisfaction using them was extremely low.

I don't recall ever having done any extensive testing on the accuracy or squareness.
I'm sure they were'nt way off or anything.

I found your info very informative and valuable to me.It reassures me in my opinion on HF's quality control or rather lack of.One time the item is great and the very next time it is often junk. This is why I inspect all in the store when possible!I also disassemble, inspect,go over, detail, correct, lube and preserve everything that I buy where feasible.I mean that I look for defects with a GOOD Magnifying Glass and even run cotton "Q"tips over metal looking for burrs.I then correct everything that I can down to the slightest detail. There are very few things you buy that you cannot improve on.alfred

FWIW, its 13 years later and I',m still using the centerfinder head and rule part to mark the center of dowels and even square or near square pieces. So I guess it was a $6 centerfinder and it works very well at that.

  • A review of the Kreg Precision Trak & Stop Kit
    by twistsol

    Summary
I built my miter station last summer and used the Kreg Precision Trak & Stop Kit. The kit was just the starting point. 8 feet of track and a single flip stop didn’t meet my needs since I was building a miter station the width of my shop, nearly 24 feet. I added four 48” pieces of top track and three additional swing stops so I could have two left and two right. Finally, I added metric rules to the top. Total cost breakdown is as follows

  • Review of VIX-type Self Centering drill bits
    by LCHIEN
I have always had trouble mounting small hardware on small wood boxes, with the hasps and hinges always looking slightly off perfectly square - particularly a problem with flat head screws and countersunk hardware which aligns the hardware to the hole location and centers on the hole.

I'm talking small wood screws. I place and mark the hardware carefully and mark the center of the hole with a sharp awl.
The problem comes about with small bits like 1/16 and 5/64 and 3/32"...

  • Grizzly Overarm Blade Guard review.
    by twistsol
Since my new shop is in the basement, dust collection is a bit more important than when I had my own building and could do as I pleased in the shop. With that in mind, I upgraded the dust collection on my table saw. I purchased the Grizzly Overarm Blade Guard to use with the saw.

First impressions were that this is an extremely solid and well built unit. It's made mostly of steel and connects to a 4" DC hose. There were a number of issues getting it set up and installed, and a...

  • Kreg KMA 3220 5mm Shelf Pin Jig
    by twistsol

I decided to look for the rock bottom cheapest 32mm drilling system available that would let let me create real 5mm holes spaced 32mm apart, that was easy to use, and didn’t require a bunch of setup time. I’m really surprised at how much I like this little Keg jig especially when you consider the price of $34.99, and it has everything included. There were a couple of jigs cheaper but you needed to buy a self-centering 5mm bit to go along with them so they would...

  • Knife marking pencil Accutrax
    by LCHIEN
Here's a tool I found useful for marking. Accutrax pencil blade marking knife.

I have one I've been using on and off for a while. Its a fine pencil lead in the shape of a utility blade that can be installed in any utility knife handle and used with a straight edge, combination square, saddle square etc. to mark easily seen, fine lines on wood..

Here's mine. I have not broken it, it seems to be quite sturdy. The sharp edge lasts a long time. I'm still on the...

  • Saddle squares
    by LCHIEN
Hey, I'm sharing one of my favorite tools. A Veritas Saddle Square. Actually I have two in different sizes. This is the large size for marking 2x4 and 4x4 (shown on 4x4 here). One of those tools that makes woodworking a pleasure.

They're great for continuing lines from side to side. And even side to opposite side.
Works really well when the board has a rounded edge or some wane where the edge is not really sharp and square but the two adjacent faces are square to...
