A very effective and inexpensive retractable handle system can be made using (4) 3/4“ 1/4-20 u-bolts and (2) 3/4” x 36” black pipe (use longer pipe if you have the wide-table kit). You will also need an additional (4) 1/4-20 nuts. You will also need the Caster
The corner bolts on the right side of the stand are almost perfectly spaced for the u-bolts. I found that by threading the 1/4-20 nuts all the way onto one pair of the u-bolts and resting them in a metal vise I could firmly (not too hard) tap them on the bottom of the inverted U with a hammer to align them a little better. The other pair of u-bolts will be mounted 13“ away. They will not need to be ”tapped” with a hammer since you will be drilling new holes for them.
Thread a nut on each “leg” of each u-bolt before inserting the u-bolts into the holes. This will allow you to later fine tune the gap for the pipe to slide. Attach a second nut to secure the u-bolt to the stand but do not tighten. Slide the pipe in place through the 2 u-bolts. Tighten the nuts making sure the pipe can slide without difficulty. Adjust the exposed nuts as required to allow the pipe to slide.
NOTE: Black pipe usually comes with a plastic piece protecting the threaded ends. Leave that plastic piece on each end. It will prevent the pipe from pulling all of the way through the u-bolts and will protect your hands from the sharp edges of the pipe threads.
