    Lunchtime project failure

Today's lunchtime project was removal of a dimmer switch and the builder basic light in my office and installation of a new ceiling fan.

    Here is the final result.

The motor on the fan would hum then stop, if it started it made so much noise you couldn't stand to be in the room. Even when it is off the ceiling and I turn the motor manually, it makes a clunking noise about every 1/8 turn.

The fan is brand new as of Saturday. I've emailed tech support (in china of course), but I bought it from home depot. Now it is just the wait and see with customer service how long until I have a working fan.

This is the 19th ceiling fan I've installed in my life and the 2nd that has had an issue. That is slightly higher than a 10% failure rate. The other one was a Hunter fan with a bad controller for the light kit. If you wanted a strobe, it was perfect.

Wouldn't a trip back to HD to exchange it for another fan been easier? Unless of course it was the last one they had in stock which would have been the case if it was me in your situation.

because its installed and if there is a quick fix, that's easier than uninstalling and a trip and reinstalling.

It was an online order and it isn't available in the store, but otherwise, yes. Plus there is the added bonus of no gas cost to drive there and back which isn't as big a factor now that I have moved to civilization. Home Depot isn't a 2+ hour trip anymore.

I have installed dozens of ceiling fans. I don’t know what it is about installing a ceiling fan, but it is the homeowner do it yourself task that I detest the most! Every brand and model seems to have their own hanging method, and none are obvious without setting down and studying the 9 page 14 language instruction sheet that is as large as a twin bed sheet… or on some slow internet site that barely can be seen on a phone. Looks like by now they would have thought to manufacture a ceiling fan with a plug like a twist-lock electrical receptical and cord. When we built our house I installed a weatherproof ceiling fan in the glassed in patio room. The install was simple and easy, and my wife really liked it. That settled that, i immediately purchased another one exactly like it for its replacement. 17 yrs later it’s still humming along great! That fortifies my belief that if you purchase spares you will never have to use them, cheap insurance.

The new motor arrived today and all is now well. I can now wait a few more degrees before turning on the AC.
