Who locks their tools up tight?

Just read a reddit post where someone's favorite Lee Valley chisel was borrowed from his tool box and used to chip paint.

Who locks up their hand tools? Answers are anonymous.

When I travel overnight or longer, I lock my shop. Otherwise, I do not. I have video cameras on 24/7. I live in a small town with well patrolled streets. Mayor lives on one side and police chief lives across the street.

Unless I am on property and outside, house is always locked. Cameras plenty. Generally safe neighborhood. Many eyes watching and many gun owners. Not safe if you don't belong here.

My tools are secured from those that shouldn't have access. That said, some of my neighbors have the access code to the Shop, the garage and/or the house. If we're not home, and usually if I am, I get a text asking to borrow X or if I have Y. I'm the old guy in the neighborhood with all the tools.

I finally have my shop to the point that everything has a place and everything is in that place. I can walk in and in an instant tell if something is missing.

The doors to the house are locked even when we are home. Home has a security system with monitoring and the system is armed when we are not home or at night when we sleep. Shop is in the basement and the one window in the shop is covered with white translucent view blocking paper so the interior of the shop can't be seen from the outside. We live in a suburban area with low crime, but there are random thefts that occur, mostly of stuff left exposed. I haven't heard of any break ins in the ten years we've lived here.

            I've always been security-minded.

When I first moved to Painted Post, we rented one of the many company-owned duplexs which had a garage for each unit. I'd find my gas can empty, all too often! Later when we bought our own home, I would find my lawn shed tampered with, so bought a lock for that.

Here in Binghamton, where I have both a garage and a workshed, both are locked unless I'm out there. The house is locked 24/7 even when we're there; and the entryways are double locked. We have a monitored alarm system which we activate in the evening and whenever we are out of the house.

My tools are in both the basement and in the workshed, except the garden and lawn tools, which are in the garage, always locked unless I'm out there. Most of my cabinets have locks, but unless I'm going away for a while, they remain individually unlocked.. In my workshed, the power is always terminated when I leave and the doors and windows locked. I keep a small indicator light in one shed window that I can see from the upstairs library, just in case I forget to terminate the power.

Just had a secondary thought on this. Probably 90% of my tools have the RYOBI logo on them, which likely makes them less desirable to theives.

I lock my shop tight, pull shades on windows, padlock roll up door and unplug all power tools when I leave home for several days. If I’m home I unlock the shop in the morning and lock it in the evening. There is also a sign on the shop door..

You didn't have one fitting to an attached garage workshop. I keep the garage doors closed and locked as well as the interior access door from the house locked.
