QUESTION: If a person buys a pistol or rifle at a firearms dealer/store, do they "keep" a box or two of ammo back to sell with the firearms? . . . but not on the shelf?

Seems strange to sell a gun without selling at least a box of ammo.

        Hank,

I don't think most dealers do this. Many people own more than one gun of a given caliber, especially handguns. So it wouldn't make a lot of sense to assume the new owner didn't already have ammo. And the dealer would not know what sort of ammo the new gun owner would want. There is a lot of variety, especially in the popular calibers.

I got a call yesterday from the gun smith that has my Colt .32 saying it is ready to be picked up. When I pick it up Friday I will ask Hank his opinion on the situation.

For those here that are not really aware what the prices of ammo are... the standard military round is 5.56 x 45mmm, and we cringed when it was .25 cents a round. Now the average price is $1.00 per round. That is more than specialty hunting ammo cost where only 5 or 6 were used the whole hunting season.

For what it's worth, and I am sure I have mentioned it here previously. I am a hunter, and depending on what and where I am hunting I use one of a potential of 4 weapons for the hunt.

#1. Remmington 710 in .270. This is my go to for deer.
#2. Remmington 710 in 30 .06. This is my go to for anything bigger.
#3. Old Soviet SKS that has been accurized by a gunsmith friend of mine. Improved gas tube, bipod on the bayonet lug etc... I use this for East Texas hogs. Distances are usually pretty short so spot on accuracy isn't as important as go down NOW power.
#4. Wesson .44 mag. This thing is something I should sell. I haven't used it since 1994 on a Javalina hunt in the Rincon mountains in Arizona. Nothing like having to have a gun you can take up the tree with you when the Javalina turns and comes at you...

Panic, causing a buying frenzy. The number of CCL's I know about went through the roof, before the last election, and still has stayed up there. Fear, about ammunition being outlawed, as some has in the past (become for law enforcement use only). Manufacturers, loving the increased profits, probably controlling both their costs, and production. (friend of mine talked to a friend who works for Federal, and they said on a certain caliber, they have a two year waiting list). And yes, even the government order, because it doesn't make any sense to me, that the local government ammunition plant, would be talking about a 50% reduction in staff and letting their independent contractors expire, if they didn't want to put a dent in generally available ammo.

The local Bass Pro, tends to have a line at the door in the mornings, and and sold out every time they get in a batch. My understanding is this is even with limits on purchases (of course there are still ways around that, such as every family member, etc)

Our government actually still has a munitions plant for small arms?!

This link is an old article but it did enumerate some of our capabilities. Our sole military plant can only produce 4 million rounds a day!

An interesting thought, Linux. When you say local plant do you mean you happen to live near the US Lake City Munitions plant or is there another plant that I am not aware of?

What could just be cost cutting and outsourcing of an inefficient facility (reducing staffing at a local ammo plant? or possible closing) could be covert means of limiting supply. The consensus seems to note that its more hoarding.

I agree that many factors are at work. More importantly, can you pick me up a couple of cans of surplus

If you read my location information, you should see that I am in Independence, MO. Your linked article, you must have not read, or you would see that location. Lake City is VERY local for me, as I have friends, a relative and neighbors (daughter) that works there. (not all directly for the plant, one works for the subcontractor, whose contract is up in June)
The garage I worked at, the owner, as a kid, worked with his uncles, who made the bullet molds for them, as he still has an old one in the shop.

I did and did, hence the request with emoticons at the very end, if you read that far

I didn't see the need for any emoticons until the joke at the end. I was just trying to clarify if there was some other munitions facility. I thought the Lake City Plant was a military facility on a base. I apologize for the confusion.
