    yet another hypothetical idea

Okay, here is one to test the broad base of knowledge here on the board:

How would you dig a 60' in Diamater, 60' deep hole?

I would never try to dig a hole that big. You did mean 60 feet right? It would take quite a bit of heavy machinery to do that.

I can think of several ways, especially as the hole was not specified for shape.....

invite a small asteroid to visit

drill hole 60' deep and insert proper sized explosive, ignite said explosive and run like .....

divert small stream to location and start a spiral flow of water

            very large carpenter bees

tell some 13 yro boys you stashed your porn collection down there

perform radioactive experiments on a few gophers, release mutant giant gophers at location.

buy a dragline and play with it

            or....

Phase 1) Go to a fat farm...

              Phase 2) Bore a 4" hole, 60 feet deep...

Phase 3) Toss in a candy bar...

              Phase 4) Stand clear...

I'd hire someone else to do the job, assuming there was a good reason for digging a hole like that in the first place. If the hole is square (meaning a cube 60' on a side), that's 216,000 cubic feet or 8000 cubic yards of dirt to move. Enough to fill something like 900 concrete trucks.

I would prefer an above ground shop. But, this question isn't that hypothetical. I would dig that hole in my front yard if I thought there was gold down there, like this guy.

                      Thanks CMan for the insight.

We now know why Dan wanted that info. If you hit the gold vein Dan, let us know so we can dig too!

Actually, not a bid deal. You would use a track hoe and have leave a ramp to travel back out, excavating the ramp as you work back out. I'd have to work it out, depending on the foot print and depth reach of the hoe, some of the ramp would have to be backfilled to acheive the final dimension.

No problem, get me my sand wedge - Mind you, there will be spire with a ball perched undisturbed on top of it left in the middle.

start in the middle, remove everything that doesn't look like a hypothetical hole.
