It sounds very interesting that there's no damage to the cartridge and no damage to the blade If triggered. A Saw Stop triggered will cost you a new $100+ cartridge plus if you have a nice blade, another $100+ for a new blade and a delay in your project to order and replace them.

Not only can you get right back to work, but it also senses proximity, you don't actually have to physically touch it, i.e. nick you skin to activate it, and it apparently knows the difference between wet wood, and a human which the Saw Stop apparently does not.

However, there is no price or delivery date announced for what they call the D-1 Dream Saw. What if it costs a $1000 more than the the cheapest Saw Stop? That more than pays for several cartridges and several blades? And Harvey makes high end saws meaning high cost. I'll have to wait and see.

Quick research:

Their cheapest Harvey TS costs 2800 bucks without the safety feature, I am sure their new D-1 Dream saw will cost more to add the feature. I'm afraid it won't be available or affordable to the mass market for table saws.
While you can get SawStop tech in a $900 compact saw or $2000 contractor saw.

Will an economical commercial version somewhere down the road? I would personally like to see viable healthy company bring the SawStop down a few notches. Yes, Sawstop makes a great series of saws that are safe. However to hold a patent that deals with safety so well and prevent others from license some or all of the technology over and above the safety issue that they INVENTED, they deserve what ever they get in the way of new technology surpassing their own.

I know that companies inventing certain technology can do what they want with their patents. But when "Safety" is the very core of their invention, it is pure selfishness to the core.

I’d like to see the new competitor offer a “replacement module” for the SawStop” table saw. It should have the replacement cast iron top with new motor, bevel and raising components with a pigtail leading to the control module. Owner just lifts the SawStop top off, rips off the old SawStop stuff and sells it on eBay and makes a router table out of the top. A fitting end of an era.

I do wish more mainstream hobbyist or budget commercial oriented brands like Rigid and Grizzly would bring out a competitor. Pretty sure with more than one MFG on the market or soon to be anyway, legislation will be sure to follow...

Fein had the patent on the multi-tool and did the same thing. ONLY when the patent ran out did so many tool companies come out with their version. Hopefully the same will happen after SS's patent runs out;
