If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

        Very complex design.
        8" x 1-1/2" x 3/4" block
        Uses 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" drills only.
1" from each end, side holes 1/4" Dia thru
center side hole 3/8" dia. thru
Top holes centered 1" from front.
2" from right end top hole 1/2" dia thru
2" from left end top hole 1/4" thru
3" from each end, top hole 3/8" dia thru
Countersink 7/16"Dia forstner 1/8" deep on back side of side 1/4" holes for bolt head. Use hex bolt to mark pattern, use 1/2" chisel to enlarge CS hole to hex hole
Use bandsaw cut kerf 1" from front from each end to 3/8" hole.

        Drawing to come.

          Pretty cool knockoff.

I wonder if building one like a stiching pony might make it easier to hone from different angles and/or do longer strokes.

            Thanks Loring.

Complicated, but I'm sure I'll work it out

BTW I have always drilled holes for bolt heads, the dia. across the flats (and depth of the head), and then "draw in" the bolt with a wing nut - always worked for me. Never had one fall out.

if its a soft wood like pine I'll draw it in like you say. 7/16 is the flats distance for a 1/4-20 hex bolt head.
But, if its hardwood, I'll go ahead and chisel it.

I saw a new product in the MLCS woodworking catalog that came today. A $30 router bit vise.

Reminded me of this DIY one I did a few years back for a lot less than $30. Very simple to make. THought I'd bump it.

Here's an improved version drawing with instructions - smaller and with alternate screw mounting holes - not requiring a fence clamp for mounting

Very nice! If I can get back to the workshop I might want to make this...
