    oddity at Rockler

I was shopping for a 2-1/4" forstner since my set goes to 2-1/8
and i sometimes want to drill 2.25" for shop vac hose attachment on jigs.

on the second ocassion of my having to drill 1-3/4" hole then use a 1/4" rabetting bit followed by a flush trim bit to enlarge it to a perfect 2-1/4, I decided to buy a 2-1/4" bit.

So almost everyone has 2.25" forstners for around $14-17 - except Rockler.
They go from 2-1/8 to 2-3/8 and up to 3 or four inches in 1/8 increments except don't list a 2-1/4.
    I e-mailed them and they confirmed it - "we don't offer a 2-1/4""

I was wanting to order that and something else they had and take advantage of free shipping.

    Why in the world???

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

    That is wierd.

Just this last weekend I was thinking about looking to see if someone offered a set of larger forstners as mine stops at 2 1/8" too.

There's more than one way to skin that cat. If they won't sell you a 2 1/4 . I would buy a 2 3/4 & use it to make a router template to make a 2 1/4 hole with a mortising bit.

Maybe they have a 2-2/8, or 2-4/16" bit.

It is kinda weird that they skip what I imagine would be a popular size.

The cynic in me suspects they probably have a better profit margin for 2 1/4 holes already in DC hose connectors

several places offer 2.25 to 3.125" 8-piece, 1/8" increment forstners including MLCSWoodworking.com; around $90 for the set.
Takes a good DP to run them i FEEL, SLOW TURNING (350 RPM) and a good chuck and enough HP not to stall or spin the bit in the chuck.

i had no trouble finding a 2-1/4" Forstner at Amazon, MLCS, Woodcraft, Lee Valley, Peachtree, and a host of other places. Just found it really and truly odd that Rockler had a "hole" in its lineup when I wanted to buy from Rockler that day. I thought it was an oversight in printing the catalog but their customer service confirmed they don't carry one.

Maybe the former president and CEO of Rockler tripped over a 2-14" bit lying on the floor and died; then his heirs swore never to carry a 2-1/4" bit again - family curse, bad luck vengeance, whatever reason... There, that's at least as good a story as any i can think of.

I thought that MLCS was a tribute to Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp. I guess I'm wrong.

If you are needing holes that size....why not buy an adjustable hole cutter bit?
The one I'm talking about has a center pilot bit and you adjust the cutter
in/out on a metal beam and lock it down with a set screw. These are recommended for you in a drill press only...they can get out of control real fast if used in a hand held drill.

Because i like the nice clean-edged flat bottom 2"+ deep precision diameter holes that a forstner makes?
