Do You Own a Dado Blade?

Just curious how many people own dado blades and if so, do they get used?

I seldom use mine because for the most part it is easier to setup the router to make dados, not always but usually.

for short, stopped dados I use the router, but for long, deep and CLEAN dadoes I much prefer the saw/dado blade combo.

I guess I actually own two, the Freud 6 inch dado set and the Freud Box Joint set.

Like Loring, it depends on the cut whether I use the router or table saw.

I've got a couple sets and one of them wouldn't be missed. I got a wobble blade many years ago for my old Skill bench TS. The arbor wasn't long enough and I don't think it's ever been used.

A box of saw blades ended up in my garage a couple years ago and there was a old Craftsman stacking set in there. I use it often, but I would still like to get a really good stacking set that will make a true flat cut.

I have a few sets of stack blades and a couple of wobble blades (that I don't use). For dadoes, I prefer to use a router. For large or long runs holding down the sheet on a TS is a chore. Cutting face down and sight unseen, are two concerns in using the TS, IMO.

Freud 6" Super Dado. Purchased only a couple weeks ago for use in building some cabinets, but haven't used it yet.

I tend to use the dado over my router, but have used both. The dado set has more flexibility and cuts faster. I also prefer the cast iron table surface (and size) over my router table surface. If I use the router it's typically for handuse, not the router table.

Ditto - I have a 10" Canadian set but have no idea what the brand is that I purchased from a cabinet makers supply shop.

Forrest 6" Dado King. Used once. Primarily use the router table because setup is faster.

Funny you ask this. I bought an 8" Freud stacked set about a month ago cause it was on sale and I plan on building some cabinet-type projects (pantry, bookshelves, etc.). I was feeling bad about not using it so I decided to go build a cabinet from leftover scrap yesterday - it's a cabinet I'll never use, because of the size of the scrap, but I learned a lot from it anyway.

If I build a router table, I'm sure I'll use that as well, but my router table is much bigger and would require less infeed/outfeed support. If the project was really large, over 72", I'd probably have to use the router on an edge guide because then I lose the fence on my tablesaw.

Otherwise, I like the dado - awesome clean cuts and hey, I paid nearly $100 for it! It is somewhat scary though that sometimes your face is basically right over it, so if you do find a piece of metal in your wood, you're going to have a big surprise to deal with. I'm okay with having a hand on each side of the blade, it's my head I'm worried about.

I have the Frued 6 inch Dado set and use it frequently. I would definately have to

replace it. I use a router sometime, but usually say up the saw. Bill

No, but I want to be a dado blade owner. Really I just don't have the use for it right now and I probably will not for the short range future either.

If its a long rabbit or dado I will use my 8" freud set . For a short run I do it on the router table.
