    Cannister filters

I already feel guilty for posting yet another Dust Collector question...

So, I am finally in a posistion to purchase the Cannister filters for my recently purchased used Grizzly 1030 (4 bag, 3 HP). Still haven't used the collector since the sale included no bags.

I know everyone here is big on the Wynn Filters, and I spoke with them and the 35 kit that goes on the HF would fit my setup perfectly (or as well as on the HF). The cost would be $130 per (Spun bond), and $15 shipping per, so a total of $290 for the pair.

Option #2, is the Grizzly filter that goes on the 1030's big brother (G0562, double cannister vs. double upper bag). Also Spun Bond, also 1 micron, but WITH the triple flapper for ease of cleaning, and it was built to fit my unit. The new 2008 pricing for these has dropped from $185 to $150 per, plus $10 shipping, plus $10 oversize fee. So that total is $340.

With the difference being $50 for the pair, should I go for the 'branded' Grizzly that I know will fit with no issues?

It is a tough call, because spending $290 on filters hurts enough as it is, but I feel as though I really need to set this machine up the proper way and not cheap on and go with 2.5 micron bags, although it would certainly work better than my shop vac that is currently in play.

    BTW- Happy New Year Everyone!

    Lee

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd go with the Griz. IMHO the "flapper" is a big advantage. Both spun, both 1 micron, both good quality from what I've read. And less expensive too.

    Anyone have the Griz? Comments?

If the way the Wynn filter fit my HF DC is any indication, I don't think you'd have any disadvantage there. It does lack the beater bar but if you have compressed air available, I don't think that's a big deal, either.

In past DC discussions we've pretty well established that while having too little horsepower in a DC unit can result in a burned-up motor, having too much HP does no harm. Have you considered blocking off one side of your DC and running it as a two-bag system? That way you'd only have to buy one filter, and empty only one bag (although twice as often).

Well the flapper bar might be worth the difference.

You might also consider the 70 dollar cannister they offer, then simply build something to attach it to the DC body. No real disadvantage there, cept you gotta spend some additional shop time getting it running. Save you a few $$$...

          Larry,

This idea was presented to me in one of the previous topics (since it will only be a one machine at a time shop), but I recall someone comparing it to a shop vac when you put your hand over the tube (the motor revs higher in an attempt to compensate).

Has anyone ever actually tried this? It would be great to save some cash now, and know that in the future, if needed, I could "double the system". Would this result in a 1.5 HP system?

I guess I am skeptical of the idea, fearful of damaging the motor.

Garasaki - which $70 filter are you speaking of?

MilDoc - I think I agree on the $20 for the flapper bar. I understand that compressed air will yield the same if not better results, I find myself at times to be the laziest man on earth. With the flapper attached right there, it gives me a fighting chance to actually maintain the filter.

          Best,

I have the Wynn and IMHO compressed air doesn't quite get the job done, and takes far longer than a flapper like my buddy has.

Try an electric leaf blower on the lowest setting. More CFM and less pressure. It works better than an air compressor (or flapper), but isn't as convenient.

From what I can gather, the 35A series filters were basically a response to the popularity of that filter (9E series) but made in a larger diameter, so it was easier to attach.

Just hung up with Grizzly Tech support, I asked them about closing off one side of the machine in lieu of the double system. He said that the purpose of doubling the bags is not for suction, but for exhaust dispersion. Obviously, but I hadn't really thought of the process from that side before he said it.

He said that with bags, he thinks the machine would blow them apart if you tried it, but the canister would "in theory" be able to handle it. He also said that if the canister did rupture, they would not cover the replacement in any way.

He also gave me his extension, so that if I did try it, I could let him know.

Really helpful folks over there, kinda like here.

So, I guess I am as unsure as I was before I called.

I have the Grizzly canister mounted to the HF DC for about 2 yrs now.
A perfect fit. Works quite well, it seems to perform as expected. The flapper is quite useful.
I think I paid $165 plus shipping for mine.

Ha, I wish I had been smart enuf to think of what the Griz tech guy said... possibly blow the plastic collection bags apart on the bottoms.

With your 20" rings ( I presume they are 20") you could also fit the canisters from

Any concern about wearing out the pleated cannister filters w/ the flapper/beater mechanisms? On the surface, a HF 2hp DC upgraded w/ the 1 micron cannister filter + one of Thien's separator lids on a drum seems like it would be a pretty effective setup, but I noticed on Bill Pentz's website (I agree, he does go a bit over the top) a concern about wearing out the filters. I just wonder if this is likely to happen anytime soon with hobby usage levels?

I think it would essentially become a Grizzly G0548 2HP canister DC unit. If you look at the specs of that machine and yours, you'll see that both have a 12" impeller and a 6" main inlet. The parts list diagrams show six blades on the G0548 impeller, eight on yours; that appears to be the main difference. The CFM specs are 1700 and 2300 respectively but such numbers are always optimistic, so that 600 CFM difference is probably more like 350-400. But even if it's the full 600, I have a hard time believing that quantity of additional air would be capable of blowing a filter apart -- or even blowing the plastic bottom bag off.

I don't see how it could damage the motor, either. The biggest danger to the motor would be running it with no resistance at all, so that the motor "runs away" and burns up -- see Jeff Schronce for more on that. You will have twice as much resistance on the exhaust side and of course the resistance on the inlet side will be the same. If anything your motor will be more safe, not less.

I can understand your reservations, and it's entirely possible I'm wrong. All I can tell you is, if it were my machine, running it with one side blocked off wouldn't concern me at all.

I've never seen anyone post they wore out the filter. So, if it happens at all, it is likely to take years. Then you buy a new filter. It's not supposed to last forever.

Loring, so is your model H5783 on the filter? (just making sure because it shows the flapper, but doesn't say it is included)

Have you found any plastic bags you prefer over others (some are thinner from what I have read).

I have TOO many projects this year, and don't want to add making a flapper as one of them, so it is worth the extra difference to me, if I can buy one with it, and be done with it. (dust collection location makes it difficult to use air all the way around).
