Thanks for the heads up on the Home Depot charcoal being on sale. I had to to go there anyway so it works out great. With all the grills going this weekend who in the neighborhood will notice another stump being burned out.sigpicComment

I have a dogwood stump--tiny by youse guys standards, but the roots are really hard; I think I'll try the charcoal solution at least on the visible parts. Thanks for the various hints.==========

My neighbors will notice. They can tell when I smoke with Mesquite versus Pecan... Except the one guy down the block that uses a gasser... Guess he must work for a refinery... :-).
Seriously though, my neighbors close by know what I am doing and are okay with it... We've had a lot of this going on this past month or so, I am FAR from alone in doing this... The guy next door not only is doing his stumps, but is having windows and siding redone right now... Must be nice...Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. I am simply going to take flashing, make a hoop, cut it a hair long so that I can slit each end to that they interlock, and then plop that over the stump, fill with cheap charcoal (I have 4 bags of Kingsford, and 2 bags of HEB charcoal right now), light it up, let it burn down , keep filled until I run the charcoal out... If that stump isn't gone by then, I am going to start calling around for a stump grinder that is willing to drag it down the bayou...
Now I know why the city has been so danged lazy on this...Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. Please check out and subscribe to my Workshop Blog.Comment

I don't know if aluminum flashing will melt. If it's sheet metal, you'll probably be OK.

Hmmm....
Any other ideas? My concept is to keep the charcoal in, up against the stump, and being able to easily add more...
I have a mess of old paver bricks laying around... I guess I could ring around the stump that way...Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. Please check out and subscribe to my Workshop Blog.Comment

Paver bricks will work to hold things in but.... yeah, there is always a but... if they are wet they will explode when heated and the water in them turns to steam. Usually just parts popping off of the sides into the fire, sometimes more.
Just to make it interesting build up the bricks and put a spit across them to roast the suckling pig for Memorial Day.

Well, it has been going since Friday evening.... I made a simple ring of steel and have been keeping it stocked on charcoal the entire time...
I am now as far as I can tell, about 3" below grade, but I want to keep going. The stump remnants themselves are smoldering which is good...
I SHOULD be able to let this burn finish, clear out all that ash (and there is a LOT of it...) grab some fill dirt, and get busy with leveling it back out. My plan is to level as best I can anyway, the fence line with fill dirt, setting the posts, leveling the top rails, installing my 2 sets of lower rails, (Wind storm code requires 3 sets, a lower, an upper, and a middle), and then going to town with the rot board and then the pickets. God willing, and the creek don't rise, in my case literally, I SHOULD be able to get this all done by the end of next weekend.
It is now too sinfully hot to want to even bother with anything outside except BBQ... So I get to take the caulk gun out, and fix some missing caulk in the master bath...Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. Please check out and subscribe to my Workshop Blog.Comment

Hey it's not even full blown Summer yet! You're getting too used to the AC.
Granted, this is coming from someone who is trying to figure out if he has enough canvas to enclose the awning in front of his shed to keep from having to cool the whole neighborhood. (and trying to not think about the 14.8 amps the window unit pulls.)

Around here recently, that's an accusation I can live with. This past winter was unusually cold, and the spring so far is trying to make up for lost time.. We have been lower / mid 90s now for 2 weeks already... So much for easing into summer...Hey it's not even full blown Summer yet! You're getting too used to the AC.
