        another houstonian here

I like in the Clear Lake area. I second Marc @ the wood whisperer. He is a very cool guy. He sent swag to the Woodworkers Club of Houston picnic. I really like this website because it always teaches me something. Lumberjocks.com is great for seeing all sorts of different projects people are doing. Newwoodworkers.com is a great place for tool review of all kinds. M & G sawmills is a great place, just really far. I got some great deals on mesquite cutoffs a couple of weeks ago. Brazos Forest Products (formerly Hogan's) is a great place, ask for Garcia. Clark's and Houston hardwoods are not too bad either.

Just remember, it is not what you have, it is what you challenge yourself to make. Enjoy, and have fun.

              Welcome to the forum.

I live in Mississippi. What I love about this forum is we've got members from all over the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Poland, Ireland, Puerto Rico, and Japan.

Also, we've got a range of expertise, from occasional weekend wood butchers (like me) all the way to professionals who make their living with their tools.

              Hope you enjoy it!
              - Chris.

More Texans - is there a conspiracy here

Welcome Mike, this is a great site, a wealth of knowledge in existing posts and tucked away in the grey matter of the members (that hasnt been replaced with sawdust )

As you setup your new found tools and shop we look forward to your posts and projects.

                        Mike,

Post up pics of that band saw, maybe one of the folks here can help you identify it. These folks are pretty smart cookies...

I went to buy the tools from the guy. He was late. Didnt have the planer there. Misrepresented the table saw. He had listed everything with a seprate (sp?) price but when I tried to just buy the compound miter saw he wouldnt part with it. I asked him why when I had him on the phone 3 times that day didnt he mention that the planer was not there? He had the gall not to answer but to continue to explain to me why I was passing up such a good deal on the table saw. The table saw table was extremely small, the safety gear was not there. Upon further conversation he devulged that he had to shim something in there to make it cut straight. I just took an instant dislike to him as soon as he greeted me for some reason. I am a reasonably easy going fella for the most part. I expect that he's a charlaton.

To make matters worse, I went down the street and bought a router and router table from another fella. Its everything he represented but I didnt know much about them. It a 1995 craftsman unit. It only accepts 1/4 inch bits, no height adjustment. That, is entirely my fault. I should have researched more.

Hey, Thanks for letting me vent.

Now, I am looking for good deals again. I did see a new Grissly G0555 for $395 in a woodworking catalog. Yall, think thats a good deal or no?

I really want to resaw some of the logs I have around here.

if the router table is any good (not one of those flimsy sheet metal legs/thin aluminum top models like sears and Vermont American used to sell) then you can alwyas fit a new router to it...

If you are going to be resawing a lot of logs then a G0555 is going to probably be a bit small for you. You should really be thinking about something with a native 12" resaw capacity (not addon on riser) and a bigger motor.

I messed up, its a sears unit. I was wondering if another router would mate up to it.

I am just outside of NE Houston (beltway 8 & Lake Houston Parkway)
I forgot to mention that earlier in my introduction
Thanks everybody for the warm welcome.

I am researching Home Depot's reconditioned tools right now. I will have the ole shop fool of tools befor New Years. Then, I need to learn how to use them. Its something I have been interested in for a while now and I am fairly certain that I can aquire the skills needed (in time I reckon) to become a fair woodworker.

                              Thanks Again

If you are willing to swallow Grizzly's shipping costs... The GO555 is a VERY nice saw... You might want to consider the GO555X with the 1.5HP motor instead though. More motor is better!

I think I know the guy with the Delta. A recent CL listing if I have the same one... Pretty rusty, better off waiting for a good saw...

IF you want a portable saw, my BTS21 will be coming up for sale in about 3 weeks for a good price. I try my best to take excellent care of it, and it works well.. I'll give BT3Central members a fair shake on any of my stuff for sale!
