    And Now for Something Different

    Meet Mabel:

I got "sort of" suckered in to building a coffee table for my older daughter's apartment (one kid out, one to go).
After taking a class last summer with Darrell Peart, on Greene & Greene details, I was sort of chomping at the bit to try out there new found skills. The request for the table came at the right time and as you all know, saying no to a daughter is impossible, for a host of reasons.

So here it is, Mable the Table, at least I thought the name funny at the time.
It's made entirely out of Cherry, with Ebony details, as per Darrell's book. The original table design was in FWW issue 178, Aug. 2005.
I changed some of it by using cherry, not Mahogany, floating tenons, not thru, and adding a full bottom shelf for her cat to hang out.
Usually I suck at building large things, but I found this less of a pain than I expected.
Let me know what you guys think. Should I go back to making boxes or have a giant shop sale?

looks nice, clean lines with an extraordinary amount of detail for a simple table. Timeless style. I'd be proud to have that in my living room.

Really REALLY nice Bruce! Exquisite detail! I like the ebony accent. Looks terrific ... same quality craftsmanship you demonstrate in your boxes. Well done and a piece to be cherished by family members for many years.

After displaying a hideous piece of furniture like that, I wouldn't even attempt a shop sale.

Just post a FREE sign on the shop door about midnight Friday. I'll be there about 1:00 AM on Saturday to put you out of your misery!

Seriously, that is a fantastic table! The Ebony accents against the Cherry will only get more beautiful and striking as the Cherry ages.

Have his daughter ask him to make one for you, apparently he can't turn her down.

Well done sir. I really like the ebony details. I have three daughters, and I was under the impression the word "NO" had been stricken from the English language.

Beautiful. I love the contrast between the Cherry and Ebony, A family heirloom, indeed.

That is really a sweet table Bruce!! I would say the class was well worth it What's the finish on the cherry? The edge of the top board had me thinking fumed white oak at first!

Really nice, Bruce. Exceptional looking finish. Please share.

So jealous you got to work with Darrell. His article in Wood many years ago really got me interested in G&G.

Beautiful. I love to work with Cherry, but the ebony highlights and breadboard top really, I mean really, add lots of "quality, hand built' looks. Nice work indeed.

                        Regards, Steve.

                          Bruce,

Well done. That is truly beautiful. It would, easily, fit in the Gamble House out this way.

Is that Gabon Ebony, or did you "ebonize" some other wood. At close to $100 a BF, that table should be locked up at night.

Just a couple of design questions. For glued up top like that (or a big solid piece of wood), what's the function of the pieces at each end of the table? Is it for look only or it serves an actual function?

                            Thanks.

Everyone already took all the adjectives, Bruce. But, I'm with them - beautiful!! I don't believe that you don't do more of these intermediate sized projects. BTW, the cats will thank you for the full shelf but, I'll bet it would look great with the intended 'lighter' stretchers. Is that cherry a bit on the brown side or did you stain it? I know that it's a sin to stain cherry but, I had to make some handles for Dad's desk so I stained some older cherry with dark walnut and got a rich sort of brown. Anyway, back to your cherry...
