    Checkering

Over the past several months I've been working on checkering a stock for a relative. The stock is for a Ruger No.1 barreled for the .25-20 single shot and was built for single shot competition. Click on the picture to be directed to a photo album of more views plus two of other stocks. BTW the stock was roughed out by Al Beisen, fitted and finished by it's owner. I only did the checkering. I've been told that the value of such a peice of wood is $1k...so all in value of this stock alone will be close to $1.3k.

    Beautiful work Mark.
I think watching my uncle making custom gun stocks when I was a kid gave me my desire to do woodworking.

That is the work of a TRUE craftsman there, I remember my grandfather doing some of that, and looking at his stocks as a kid thinking, 'that's neat and all, but whoopdie doo' ..... now as I get older and realize the time and craftsmanship that go into it, I sit in awe of the work.

Mark, I've seen a lot of your work and I just gotta tell ya that you keep raising the bar for yourself with each and every job. Very Nice once again!
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'

Beautiful work Mark. I'd never have the patience to try it on scrap. Lucky for the rest of us that some people have both the patience and the skill to do it. Pat

                          Mark,
Superb job on that checkering! Anytime you can see the grain through the checkering it is a sign of superior work. What point count is the checkering cut to? Seems pretty fine.
