We have a straggler here in northern Illinois, still hanging out at our feeder.

They're fascinating to watch. We have as many as four at a time, but they are territorial, always chasing each other off rather than sharing - we have two feeders with 4-6 feeder ports on each, plenty of room,

My wife keeps up 4 - 5 feeders and numerous flower beds for hummingbirds. The greedy little buzzers will fly over the flowers to fight off the other hummers on the feeders.

Hummingbirds are very territorial. But they do have odd behavior. If you have 2, 3, 4 or so birds visiting, they will always drive off any rival birds in the area, preferring to drive them off by flying at them, even though there are several feeders each with several ports, rather than settle for an unused port. They'll give up active feeding to drive off any other hummers. But I've noticed in crowded feeding areas, where there are dozens of birds, (unfortunately never my backyard) that they all coexist peacefully at the feeders. Strange.

I’ve noticed in the last couple days we have more hummers than I’ve seen at one time. Dozen visible jockeying for position at the feeders. It looks like a wrestling battle royal! Can’t recall seeing a ruby throat hummer this fall?

The most interesting experience I had with a humming bird was several years ago. I had two feeders hanging low in a tree about 60 ft from the kitchen window, and both were empty. A hummingbird went to the feeders and then flew to the kitchen window, looked straight at me, then reversed course flew to the feeders and back to the window, just about 6 inches from the window itself. I got the message and immediately added some hummingbird sugary water to the feeders. I thought that unusual and then did a little research (google) and found a couple of other posts from others on the same thing.

We just got a new feeder yesterday, hope to see some too. Hummingbirds are such fascinating little creatures. I was reading dollar general corporation reviews recently for totally unrelated reasons, and it made me realize how much small details matter — just like setting out feeders at the right time. You’ve got to pay attention to catch those quick visits! Thanks for the reminder; I’m going to refill my feeder this weekend

It's over here (Houston). We haven't seen a hummer for 3 or four days, they just turned off, I guess headed for central america. Cleaned and put away the feeders until April.

They were buzzing like mad here (South Ga.) Friday. Temp dropped int high 60s f and rained. I didn’t see one all day today. That was what they were waiting for.
