Neighbor's kid stopped by last night, asking some questions about the timing belt on his Accord, and talking about how he's trying to buy an old car with a 454. Gas prices be ****ed. It's what he wants. I offered to race him with the Tesla and he said that would not be fair, he knows he'd lose easily, but that electrics are still boring because they don't make any noise. He's 19 now, works on everything himself, and will just go find info on the timing belt now that I gave him the basics.

Honda’s are not that hard to replace the timing belt on, except there isn’t a lot of room under the hood for hand access. Did you tell him that it is recommended that the water pump should be changed while the timing cover is off? The last one I replaced a couple of yrs, ago required the use of a special socket to hold the crank pulley and be able to remove the bolt from inside that socket. Nothing else would work. Most, but not all Honda engines are interference engines so if the timing belt needs replacing because it has failed, it probably doesn’t matter now. Valves and a valve job + gaskets and a new belt cost more than a good junkyard motor and are more than the average home mechanic has facilities to change since it is dropped out of the car rather than pulled out. Usually way above the average 19 year olds pay grade.

No failure, when he bought the car with 80k on it years ago, he asked me to go over it for him. I noted he'd need the belt at 105k miles, no later, and probably rear shocks about the same time. He listened. He's approaching 100k now. So yeah, he's going to do it right, pump, both belts. Smart kid, and like many in my area, most are not what many people in my generation whine about as "kids these days." Most are doing good.Comment
