When I woke up this morning I am among the ranks of the unemployed. Yesterday was my last day on the active roles at the Post Office and, although I haven't worked since getting sick last July, as of this morning I am officially retired!
I went in Monday morning, dropped off my uniforms for some of the young guys to put to use, cleaned out my locker, talked to some of the carriers that hadn't left for the street yet. Most of them were already gone so I will go by and say my good byes another day.
The last thing I did was go in the manager's office and drop/toss my badge on his desk! He hadn't been advised through the system and, GOLLY GEE!, I plumb forgot to call him and tell him I was retiring and wouldn't be back at work. The look of surprise on his face made my day. I only told one person and he kept the secret for me.
There was some talk of a going away brunch, usually done on a carrier's last day, and I said if they wanted to have one to give mea couple of days warning. Pretty sure I can adjust my now hectic schedule to be there.
I am starting to pick up some weight since the last surgery and slowly getting my energy back. Looking forward to getting some shop time in and doing the final touches to the trike and trailer. I have some maintenance/repairs to do to the truck and van that have been put off because of my health and even those look appealing to me right now. After everything else is mostly caught up I am going to start the teardown and rebuild of my '65 Chevy truck.
