Global warming?

have you all been following the ice-breaker saga in antarctica?
A Russian research ship with tourists aboard was researching global warming and of course got blocked in by rapidly forming summertime ice. A Chinese icebreaker came to rescue them and got locked in the ice as well 6 miles short of the Rusky ship. Then an Aussie icebreaker almost got hemmed in but using the Helo from the Chinese ship got all the passengers off the Rusky ship to the AUssie ship, and they are now sailing to safety. That leaves 125 crew aboard the Rusky and CHinese ships still trapped so the American supericebreaker operated by our Coast Guard is now going 14 days out of its way to try and free them. I hope I'm not paying for this.

I really do not see how someone that lives in cold country keeps their water systems working in the real cold weather. My well freezes up when it gets down to 35 unless I insulate it an put a heater on the pressure switch. Putting the water lines in the attic can't possibly work anywhere but the deep south. Only a fool could get away with that.

My wellhouse has 8" walls that are insulated. Sits on a concrete slab about the same thickness. The coldest it has been since we've owned the house is -15° F. No water freeze-ups yet.

I'm having the opposite problem. Temperatures in the 70's and no rain in sight. Total rainfall for 2013 was 1.9 inches, the last storm that produced 1" was over a year ago. Last December set the record for highest high (85) and lowest low (16) and least rainfall (.10") for any December on record.

What you have to remember is all these weird weather events are linked to global climate change. The increasing Carbon dioxide concentration has caused all kind of shifts in the global climate. You can look it up that 2013 was one of the hottest years on record. These polar vortexes shifting is probably related to global climate change. The droughts out in California are another indicator of global climate change.

Anybody seen "I invented the internet Al" lately heard he was in Tahiti with a bimbo. After 54 days of no rain or snow we finally got some over night you guys are getting what we should have. Now we will probably get what they call Tulle Fog hangs on ground for ever and is about 1000 feet thick.

Not to pooh pooh it too terribly much, but I hope you do understand skepticism over the whole climate warming, uh no climate change, uh no coolling thing right? Climate science is performed by those that can't accurately tell us what the weather in 2 days will truly be like let alone in the long term. Poor data has also brought bad results as well. And there is a large amount of skepticism about the whole thing that the scientific community needs to address.

I think you mean 2012. 2013 had the most daily low records in about 20 years and was a very mild year compared to 2012 and even 2011. In the mid-south in 2013, I don't think the Memphis area ever hit 100, if it did, only once or twice. In 2012, more than 40 total above 100.

It was -1 degree here in Williamsburg before sunrise this morning. We had 4" of snow Tuesday night. We moved down here to get away from weather like this!

We did have a mild summer in 2013 and no fall to speak of. Our typical cold months are Jan, Feb, and Mar. Typical mild winters with only a few nights below freezing and day temps in the 60's.
I am certain we lost many of our fair weather plants this year. Sego's generally bounce back and may this year, but I think we actually had a frost line this year, so maybe not. We planted some Washingtonia palms about 3 years ago. They are maybe 3' high now. Probably have to redo.
On the bright side, the mistletoe in our barren oaks looks unphased.

I spent one winter living in Chicago at a new job. I was never so cold in my life. At the time, a friend of mine from NY was teaching at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and used to come visit me in Chicago to warm up, he always wondered why I never drove up there.
People in Chicago were saying what a mild winter they were having, and it was -11 deg.
When I found out that the summers were as hot and humid as the winters were cold, I got the headhunter who got me into this mess to get me back to NY.
When I got home, I promised I'd never complain about NY winters ever again, until this year. Not having a lot of fun, And stupid me, I just got a three year lease on a rear-wheel drive car. Who ever said age is wisdom should be thrown into the frozen Hudson river.

I spent quite a few winters in Germany. I can only remember just a few ice storms. They were rare. I was stationed and then lived as a civilian about 30 klics from Frankfurt. Middle West Germany, but I don't think they make that distinction any longer. Hanau. Sounds like a Hawaiian name, but it ain't.
Winters there are tolerable. You can dress for it. Down here we ain't used to it and no one builds the plumbing to withstand such a storm. We faired well because I installed all the plumbing and a little extra insulation when doing it is good insurance.
All the neighbors had busted pipe.
It is forecast to hit 62 F today. Excellent!
