Canada is expected to warm up to a balmy -28 degrees this time of year.
I live 10 minutes West of the Florida panhandle. 20 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. This is where a lot of you guys come down to spend the winter at.

Yah I just felt bad about rubbing it in. Considering what some people are going through weather wise.

My neighbors were laughing at me in November saying look at that old fool putting insulation on his well pipes and it is only 60 degrees. This morning at 5:30 am I saw most of them at their wells scratching their heads and probably saying "I wish I had worked on my well when it was warm".

I really do not see how someone that lives in cold country keeps their water systems working in the real cold weather. My well freezes up when it gets down to 35 unless I insulate it an put a heater on the pressure switch. Putting the water lines in the attic can't possibly work anywhere but the deep south. Only a fool could get away with that.

I live outside Columbia, SC. This morning my thermometer showed a little under 15 degrees F as I ate breakfast. In the car, it showed as low as 11 degrees driving to work. The newspaper says these are the lowest temperatures in 89 years. Global warming indeed.

Water pipes go no more than 1 foot underground as do house footers. We will be back up around 60 degrees later this week. I will be blowing insulation into our 46 year old house Friday. We bought it in October and are trying to update it as quickly as possible. I knew the attic over the cathedral ceiling great room needed attention but when I got up there I discovered they insulated between the ceiling joists even in the 15x25 area with a flat ceiling. Some of it has fallen down because the joists are a little too far apart apparently. So no insulation in those bays. There is a ridge vent too challenging the insulation that is there. Nothing in the floor, R13 in some of the ceilings I have access to. Everything I can blow will get a foot or more Friday. Floors will have to come later. Single pane windows (but with storms) too. That will have to change soon.

Most places I've lived this level of insulation would result in major problems. But it worked for 46 years here. It won't be the case much longer, however. We've already gotten one whopper bill and the house didn't really get up to the temperature setting this morning.

There are about two weeks out of the year I wish I worked outdoors. This is not one of them.

Snow Day #3 on the year today. We're gonna be in school until August.

That is the one good thing about my new shop.
I fully insulated and sealed vapor barrier in it.
I have a small AC unit that keeps it very cool in the Summer.
We use a couple heat lamp bulbs to break any chill in the AM in there, but it took a little longer this AM than usual.

I am not done with the insulation project in my shop, although I have made good headway. It is already warming up over here. Chances are this weekend, I will be able to put my spray foam insulation up in the divider wall and start in on moving things over to the power wall.

Next step is to move enough of the "stuff" away from the top area of the remaining wall so that I can cut the holes and use them to pump insulation into the remaining wall. There are no blockers / kickers whatever you want to call the horizontal members between the studs. Just open wall cavities. I have one area that needs to be patched first. I had a weed eater incident a few years ago that still needs to be fixed...

With that said, and with what insulation I do have, it was 24 deg outside this morning, and 62 deg inside the shop, with only the little radiator running on its lowest setting.

I fully expect that by the time I have finished my project, including creating insulated "cold caps" for the A/C vents, and insulating the A/C hoses. I should have the shop set such that when it gets cold, that low setting or at least a notch up from there should get my overnight temp to stay steady in the upper 60s. Notch it up and I go over 70 which depending on how much physical work is going on there might be not a great idea...

And remember, summer is coming. While I am willing to shiver a little bit, I do need to know I can work in my shop when it is stinking hot... That is one of the HUGE reasons I went ahead with this project. Trust me, this is costing me a whole lot more than I would have been willing to invest if it was just a garage to store a car and lawn equipment!

                          Right.
I didn't insulate the shop to keep it warm.
Definitely to keep it cool. That is why I have an AC in there and no heater. It is very comfortable to work in the 60's range.
I say I don't have a heater, but we do have a kitchen oven we use for thermo forming the dust ports. It ain't that cold yet.

Hoping to get a window A/C unit for this summer, however I don't know how useful it will be.

The new garage, when it gets built, will be fully insulated, walls and ceiling. It will have conditioned space above it and will be a foot or two below grade (poured concrete wall faced with brick to get above grade). Based upon prior experience, I do not expect to heat or cool it deliberately. My shop in the house we will sell in a couple months is in a walk out basement, similarly insulated, and has always stayed reasonable temperature to me. This one might be worse but if it gets too hot I can always go fishing. If it gets too cold, it is probably time to go inside and get a fire going in the fireplace.
