    Wood magazine

    Hi,

I got a mail offer from Wood magazine -- $28 / 3 years. That comes out slightly $9/yr. What do you guys think? Good deal?

I currently have Handyman and Woodsmith. I didn't cared for Handyman at first, but it's growing on me as a fun magazine to read. I really liked Woodsmith at first, but it got boring real quick and I didn't care so much for the projects they presented.

    Thanks,

    T

That's a good deal if you like Wood magazine.

I had Wood for several years but it started feeling repetitive. I'm not in the market for any new tools so the reviews are lost on me. I've only built one item from plans in the mag since my projects are typically dictated by need and not "oh, I'm going to build that because I saw it in a magazine".

I suppose this could be said for any of the magazines, though.

I only subscribe to Fine Woodworking now. I like the projects that are presented there and I appreciate that it's not always the same group of writers who are submitting articles. I feel like I get to see many more methods of work than with Wood.

Best price I have heard in a while (they go through offer, phases). I would recommend checking it out in the library to see if you think it is going to be worth it (unless you know for sure).

Like most everyone else I rotate through magazine subscriptions. Some are crap projects and full of adds. I've stuck with Shop Notes longer than any now and plan on keeping that subscription because I like their format and they actually show stuff I can build. I believe I saw the same offer for them lately. If you call the subscription number on any of them they will usually give a better deal.

I have let my ShopNotes subscription lapse after I got the Shop Notes on DVD. Just taking too long to catch up with all those issues!

My Wood Magazine subscription is current, but about to expire I think... I would LOVE that 3 year deal...

I had a similar deal for Wood about two years ago. I like the tips and tricks the best and then there is the HF coupon section.

Some good reading and reviews in some of them that I find useful.
It is worth what I paid and worth what they are offering to you for I think.

I like it for flipping through. I usually let my subscription lapse, and after somewhere between three and six months they send that 3 years for $28 offer, which is the best I have seen for that magazine. And at least they do not send unsolicited crap like some other magazines.

The problem that I have experienced with magazine subscriptions is the sneaky tactic of magazine companies sending you "renewal notices" for magazines that you have never subscribed to. The perpatratiors hope that no one will notice that the titles are so simular you will "renew" your subscription. My financial manager has fallen for this scheme several times, and has also give the subscription letters to our children who want to suprise grandpa with another year of his favorite magazine. Grrrrr, there is a reason that I do not subscribe to a particular magazine, because I don't like it. It doesn't seem like a big deal, and probably only rubs me wrong. The last couple of fantastic subscription "renewal offers" that I have recieved I just stuffed all of their junk into the "enclosed envelope" followed by a generous squirt of wood glue and put it back in the mail box.

I received Wood Magazine for about three years and I think it's been at least that many since I dropped the subscription. I did like it, but the problem with me is that my enthusiasm seems to wain after awhile... and that it the case with any magazine subscription that I've ever had.

Problem is that everyone is a 'keeper', and before too long I've got them stacked everywhere. I just find myself more or less just skimming through them after a while and the new ones just get put on the shelf for later review, which all too often doesn't happen.

A publishing company turning down $$$$ ?! Heck, yes they'll accept your re-subscription!! Slap the check in the mail, post your cc to the website... whatever you have to do to lock in the price. Proof?? I once had 2 yrs left on my Wood subscription and a similar offer came up. I sent the money and I never heard a peep other than the mailing sticker reflected the new date - always check that!
                          Blessings,

Don't think for a minute that the publisher will automatically apply your re-subscription to the end of your existing subscription. You will have extra copies to give to your friends. When I called to complain about my subscription being overlapped they cried in their defense that businesses with waiting rooms buy extra copies and thought that was what I wanted. I'd check to see when the new subscription starts to avoid an overlap.

When I have a dozen or so stacked up, I have a magazine gutting party. I'll go through each, cut out the projects or other articles I think I might want, put them in clear sheet protectors, and store them in three-ring binders. Every now and then I prune the binders of projects or articles that I no longer find interesting or useful.

It's a good way to spend a cold and dreary day.
