    Presidential Visit

Our little town of Cannon Falls is expecting a visit from President Obama tomorrow. The rumor is that his staff was planning his route through southern MN and stopped in our town for lunch and decided it would make a good spot for a town hall meeting. Secret service and the white house staff have taken over the high school, the police chief is a bit stressed and the whole town is buzzing. There hasn't been a US president in our town since Calvin Coolidge.

The whole family and much of the cheerleading squad camped out in the park next to city hall from 3:00 pm yesterday until today at 1:00 when they were giving out the tickets to the event. They all got tickets and are really excited. I'm at the airport headed for Denver so I'll be missing it. Even though I'm not a fan, I would have liked to go; he is the president after all.

Yes, I heartily agree with your last statement. I think this country has gone too polar--either you are one side or the other and the one you are not is evil. Respect for office of the presidency has been lost in this battle.

I hope this is not too political, it was not my intent---quite the opposite. Mods, please delete if not appropriate.

I would like to see any of our presidents and maybe even go to one of those town hall things. I hope your family has fun.

I sure wouldn't want to do it here in Fort Worth though. Way too many people and nut jobs to deal with.

Small towns have plenty of nuts jobs too...

As far as lack of respect for the office, that has been gone for several presidencies. I won't say when I saw it go away, but it has been in my lifetime...

At least the route from the airport to Canon Falls is on the other side of the cities, so it won't mess up my commute...

The two years I lived in Saint Paul and drove to my job in the Western burbs I think I ended up having to wait for the Traffic Jam in Chief or his campaign opponent at least 4 times...

To the group, What's the highest public official you've interacted with--not
saw from a distance at a rally?

For me, it was Mike Castle of Delaware when I was in 7th or 8th grade. I got
an award for participating in Math League and he gave a speech, handed out
the awards, and shook my hand.

In recent history, it's the Mayor of our town. His family has been in the
town for 100years and he still runs the family's supply store--mostly work
boots and work clothes. He fitted me for my Red Wing boots.

I'm pretty sure that I'm remembering this correctly but when Obama came to our city last year the bill that the local taxpayers had to pick up for his security was around $225,000.00. I guess its nice when a President comes a calling but a nearly quarter of a million dollar bill for a few hours visit just isn't good use of my tax dollar. I know the President has to be protected and I'm not arguing that point however does the President really need to make these kinds of visits and have the local governments pay for them? FWIW, I'd feel exactly the same way regardless of who was in office.

Mine was a result of unplanned good timing. In what turned out to be a cover story, the scheduled graduation speaker was a prominent politician. When we arrived at graduation, they told us the politician was just the "warm up" and the POTUS was the main speaker. Since we were called by name and awarded our diplomas individually, he shook our hands.

I don't suppose the POTUS speaks at graduation ceremonies anymore, but back in the day, he did from time to time.

My company is pretty big, and they do their amount of lobbying and what-not. So during the last spat of elections, we had a couple of the people running for a "town hall". It was pretty basic, and of course I think most of the questions were scripted...

Yea, but I think the ratio of nut jobs per capita is constant throughout the nation. (except for maybe DC and California )

A smaller town might have a handfull or two, but with 3/4 of a million folks here (not even counting surrounding cities) there would be way too many crawling out of the woodwork for my liking.

Hand-shaking distance and brief "how ya doing" with 3 US Senators and a couple Governors, but no real significant interaction.

Tomorrow we're actually supposed to have a visit from one of our Senators at the place I work. There's a short Q&A period scheduled so we'll see how that goes and maybe bump it up to 4 handshakes
