as the article notes, americans have not taken to the dollar coins that were available before. Most other countries use coins for that amount. It would make vending machines work better.
I don't like the coins. The newer gold colored ones are easier to identify, but still cumbersome to carry. It might be cheaper, but I wouldn't like it. Switching to coins would make me use my debit card even more.
Personally, I don't care as long as they're legal tender. I do think a dollar coin should be larger than a half dollar. I'm thinking maybe the reason no one likes the recent dollar coins is they are rather easy to mistake for a quarter.
Back in the '70s I had a dollar coin that was huge. I don't remember if Kennedy or Eisenhower was on it. A "friend" stole it long ago. Probably spent it, too.
After living some in Canada with one and two dollar coins, i have to say i hate dollar coins. I would end up at the end of the day with a pocket full of coins, and they would be too valuable to throw in a jar to save for use in vending machines. I hate carrying change.
When we changed to the loonie and toonie coins, there were some issues that comes with change( no pun intended), but it went through and we got used to it. You just learn to spend it a little more often instead of pulling out larger bills.
Definitely coins! You will get used to it and start remebering to look in your change pocket eventually. Having to open your wallet for a dollar is a pita!

I'd be resistant to it but would adjust--probably by using my debit card.
I was in England last fall for business and it was a pain to use so many different
coins. However, I'm sure with time I would gotten the hang of it.
Something I noticed about the English coins. They update the picture of
Queen Elizabeth on the coins. Older coins have the younger Queen on it. It's
interesting to see her age on the newer coins. Interesting that the monarch
was being so honest about it.
I hate having change in my pocket. I dump it in a drink holder in my car, until it gets full, or a valet takes a pre-tip. $1.00 coin would just make it more expensive for me. When I get a huge jar full, I pay a big percent to have the machine, at the market, count the stuff.
How about eliminating the penny?
