    Using my driveway

I live on a curved street about 20 houses long in a subdivision. The lots are basically 70 feet wide. The street turns about 90 degrees and connects to streets A & B. A & B intersect near the entrance to the subdivision. So our street is kind of like the curved path connecting first base and third base.

We live in the 5th house from the intersection with street A (1st base)... we have one of the few houses with a U-driveway.

MY beef is that people use our driveway at all times of the night and day to make a U-turn rather than go down to street B and turn right. Its now 1:43 AM and two cars just made a loop through my driveway.

I know my next door neighbors son does it all the time - he's got a large red pickup truck he parks in the street and rather than pull up their driveway and back out he just makes a loop thru my driveway at all hours of the day and night.

I really don't like this for multi reasons. One, the headlights that shine thru my windows and glass front door from 15 feet away are annoying when they do this at night and even during the day you see these vehicles passing basically through my front yard. Two they run over the edge of the grass as its a sharp turn and break my sprinkler heads (and kill the grass and leave ruts when its rainy). Three, the sound of a large vehicle pulling up to within a few feet of your door in the middle of the night is scary. They leave tire marks on the concrete especially when they drive fast. And last, I consider it private property and a private driveway. I was always taught that driveways are private pproperty and shouldn't be used unless absolutely necessary.

Other than keep a car parked in front what can i do to discourage this?
    "Private Drive" sign, no trespassing?

Or am I being too sensitive?

Loring, your drive is private property, and I would also be annoyed - and concerned about the potential for liability. In your shoes, I'd be tempted to put in one of those remote-controlled electric gates.

Just to mes with them I'd "accidently" leave the garbage cans blocking the circle half way round on random nights.. maybe sometimes a lawnmower or a wheel barrow..

Anything to make them stop and think..

CAUTION: ROAD SPIKES ACTIVATED! DEACTIVATE WITH REMOTE BEFORE ENTERING!

For extra measure regarding annoying neighbors son, maybe put something near the garage that you can hit a remote button in your car and it will make a noise loud enough for him to hear.

Day glo letters, then hope that they can read!

            That should do it.

Without going into details, I have a similar situation with a drive around our house (and a drive through car port) that feeds into an alleyway that connects to our neighbor. Our former neighbor used to get his truck locked in by his wife or guest and just take off through our driveway and car port. It would irritate my mom to no end when she was alive. So we started parking her car in the middle of the car port so that he couldn't get by on either side.

After a few times, it stopped.

AS for you, not sure what to do. For nights - How about a timing sensor of some kind (comes on at night) that flashes BRIGHT lights into the drivers eyes as they pull into the circle.

For the neighbor's kid, how well do you know him. Would he respond to a discussion, or maybe his parents? Sometimes that makes matters worse, sometimes it solves the problems.

Someone makes a motion activated water sprinkler for boaters to use to keep birds from perching on their rigging. I think it uses the same technoligy as motion detetor driveway lights. Set a couple of these buggers up and watch the perps squirm when they get an ear full of water at 2 am.

I was thinking "PERIMETER DEFENSES ACTIVE", but that works, too.

What I want to know is why the car he can't fit into the garage because the garage is filled with junk isn't blocking the drive . Every American knows you HAVE to fill your garage with junk and leave the car outside! ;-)

Leave some roofing nails out overnight and gather them up in the morning. A friend used to stretch a steel cable across his driveway to keep the kids out that were stealing his gas. Good luck & Happy New Year.

Two cars, at 1:43 in the morning? No, I don't think you're being too sensitive.

Signs may discourage a few drivers, but most will realize -- and even excuse their actions by knowing -- that they'll be through your driveway and gone before you have time to come outside and confront them. One possible exception: signs reading SECURITY CAMERAS IN USE, backed up by three or four cameras (real or fake) in highly-visible locations. I doubt that would completely eliminate the problem, but it might discourage enough of the offenders to make the situation bearable.

You shouldn't have to do it, and it will be an inconvenience to you and your family, but blocking the drive in some manner (parked vehicle, chain, gate) is your only sure-fire solution.

Have you spoken to your neighbors about their son using your drive?

Just a thought: In Japan flexible accordion type of gates are very common, and because they are so common, there are all types and prices that look very nice and esthetically pleasing. They are very easy to open and close and the right ones add value to the property over here.

I did a quick search of several places and names, but cannot find those over here but I am sure some places have them. Everything I see on US sites looks like "security" gates while in Japan they look like part of the overall house / property layout and design.

                            sign

Maybe I can make a subtle hint... I ordered this sign.

gates/fences not acceptable the neighborhood is pretty well kept, open well manicured front yards, all have garages behind the house. Low crime, few have driveway gates even on the drive beside the house. No sidewalks, every yard lawn goes right up to the curb.

Worth a try, Loring. But you might want to mount that on a post tall enough to add this one below it, should subtlety not work.
