I hope this isn't an omen

Woke up this morning with a whole day of shop time in front of me. I was milling some logs into boards on the band saw and POOF! I blew the motor capacitor. I hope that is all I ruined. I do want a new bandsaw with larger resaw capacity and bigger motor, however I am pretty sure I can't afford that right now. Wish me luck with a the new capcitor on Monday

if the capacitor is round and plastic it is a start capacitor and the most likely thing that will blow one is a failed closed start switch. if it is a metal can capacitor it is a run cap and they can fail over time. replaceing a start cap without resolving the start switch problem will blow the next one in about 10 seconds.

      good luck

I picked up new capacitor today and the motor started. I haven't cut anything yet to put a load on the motor, but I'm hopeful the $6 part saves me hundreds

did it blow while running or while starting the motor?

A starter cap should be disengaged when running so if it blew while running then probably the starter centrifugal switch may be at fault as much as the capacitor and may repeat itself shortly.

how did you know it blew - big pop and bad smell? like one of my fellow engineers said, like a little old lady pissed in your machine?
