useful tip - typing "degrees" symbol °

We often type discuss degrees here for either temperature in Farenheit or centigrade for example, and when discussing construction techniques and joinery for angles and such.

It's possible to type it directly in Windows, as in 45° miter angle or 100°F hot outside today.

Just hold down the ALT key continuously while typing in sequence 0176 on the keypad, then release the ALT key. There's more but that's the only one I use often enough to remember.

Should work for just about any windows computer.

    <°((())><

P.S. - the keypad is on the right in a Windows style desktop keyboard, not the numbers at the top.
On a laptop the numeric keypad is shared with the mainkeyboard (you can see the numbers usually blue on the M, J,K,L,U,I,O,7,8,9 keys. punctuation on the ./;P0 keys) See the post #4 below for how to do it.

Also works for Word, Outlook, but i think not in Excel IIRC.

    Linux test, 90

Nope, it jumps tabs in Firefox under Linux.

    EDIT: Second test 22
    third 35 00B0
    4

    5th 65
    6 75

If you can't tell, this has bothered me for sometime, but to my knowledge, it is easier to type degrees, then to get a command line prompt, run: kcharselect, copy to the clipboard and °

Doesn't work on laptop/firefox combo. Also tried it in Word, Outlook, etc. with no luck. The only way is to go Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map where it tells me that Alt+0176 is the shortcut Ah the glories of computing. My guess is that the number bar on my laptop is not hitting the right spots in the programming as the keypad does on a desktop or a laptop with a number keypad off to the right.
If you can read this you assembled wrong.

        Laptop test (XP) 90°

what you have to do on a laptop is
Fn-NumLk (this should light the num lock indicator, usually a padlock with the number 1 beside it, as opposed to the caps lock key with the letter A by it.) e.g. hold down the Fn key and then press the NumLk key (usually on the upper right shared with "end")
        Hold down the ALT key
Type the blue numberpad keys in the middle of the key board, M=0, J=1, 7=7, O=6
        Release the ALT key
the "°" should appear when you release the ALT key.
Don't forget to Fn-NumLk to unlock the numeric mode of the keyboard.
Usually the Fn key is blue w/blue outline, and the numbers "pad" keys are blue numbers with blue square outlines.

I have been including ° into posts here, posts into other forums and into docs for years.

About 2/3rds of the way down in this post in 2004, I used it several times:
          http://www.bt3central.com/showthread...ighlight=60%B0

"40° on the SMT = 50° cut on the 90° box
30° on the SMT = 60° cut on the 90° box
20° on the SMT = 70° cut on the 90° box
10° on the SMT = 80° cut on the 90° box"

Try typing alt/Shift/8 and see if that will give you the ° sign. Has worked for me all the way back to "When". (I just found out that I can't do that on XP.)

Copy and paste works for it though.

I don't think I've ever seen a conventional desktop keyboard with the numerical keypad on the left, but what do I know, I don't check these facts.

More common special characters (and probably of use here too) would be fractions, which I've been using for years. The keystrokes are as follows:

            ¼ = <Alt>+0188
            ½ = <Alt>+0189
            ¾ = <Alt>+0190

N.B: ⅓ ⅔ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞ are all available to copy and paste from "Accessories," "System Tools," "Character Map." Switch to the font you're using, then scroll down to find the vulgar fraction you want.

            Also:

            © = <Alt>+0169
            ® = <Alt>+0174

            HTH.

              Ray.

I don't check facts either. Just to satisfy my curiosity about the numerical keypad being on the left, I sat in front of my keyboard and rotated it 180 degrees, and shazam, the numerical keyboard was on the left.

On Win XP Laptop, but with a desktop keyboard.

                  Firefox 3.0.10

                  Test 1 - ALT-0176 (num pad on right) works : 65°

                  Test 2 - Copy Paste works : 100°F

                  Test 3 - All of Ray's suggestions work :
                  ©
                  ®
                  ¼
                  ½
                  ¾

Thanks Loring, and everybody else - that's very useful info.

Hank, that old thread is troublesome - now I want to see that picture !

What am I doing wrong? I type the numbers 45, then hold down the alt key while pressing 0176 on the keyboard. Nothing happens until I hit the number 7, at which time I'm taken to my home page. Tried it several times with the same result.

Assuming you have a desktop 101-key style keyboard (not a laptop)
do not use the keyboard number keys at the top row... you have to use the calculator-style keypad at the right. and the NUMLOCK has to be on for the numbers to be used. 0-1-7-6 have to be pressed separately in sequence all while continuously holding the ALT key.
When done right nothing actually happens until you release the ALT key after typing 0176. Then the ° appears magically.

If you have a laptop there's no keypad on the right and the number keypad is integrated into the middle of the keyboard using 3 keys wide and four rows wide; requires use of the blue Fn key. See post #4 in this thread.

It sets bold and undeline in IE but no superscripting.
