My Sister went to wireless on Her desktop, because they had to move the modem. My

question is XP found the wireless card, but still wants to load off modem connections

which are showing not connected. What are the steps that I need to configure it for

wireless. I have 100% connectivity. Thanks Bill

Define 'load off modem'. What program(s) is she using? Is the wireless network new or did she have a mixed network before this change?

Assuming that you connected to the 'modem' with an Ethernet cable you just need to disable the Ethernet card or port in My Computer / properties / hardware / device manager / network.

If it's not that then fill in the details and someone will advise.

you need to disconnect the connections you are no longer needing.
Go to START>Connect to>show all connections
and then right click to modify the properties of each connection shown as active. Disable the ones you don't want.

After you disable them they should show as disconnected or diabled or something like that.

Thanks all, She was using the desktop pluged into the wireless router as the primary or

hard wired computer. Now with wireless card it comes up looking for ethernet

connection. I have disabled the network connections but will try to get over there and

try what has been suggested. Thanks, Bill

What he said. My guess is the wireless card isn't associated with the access point.

The wireless shows 100% but the card says it can't access it. Bill

In Control Panel->Network Connections, right-click the wireless adapter and click 'Vew Available Wireless Networks'. Does her wireless network show up in the list? If so, what happens when you try to connect to it? Is the access point configured to only allow certain network cards to connect? Is there an encryption key set?

It could be encryption that's the problem. I have found that some installations of Win-dose will not connect unless you enter the key in hex, for some reason they don't translate an understandable phrase correctly. Some wireless access points are set to only connect with listed mac addresses, so you should check that in the setup screens of the wireless router.

Well I went back and tried what David said still couldn't connect to the Internet. When

it says 98% strength on the wireless adaptor does that mean to the router? Don't have

a clue where to go now. Bill

98% just means the signal from the router is that strong. It doesn't always mean it is actually connected.

On her computer:

Click Start->Run, then type 'cmd' to open a command prompt. then type 'ipconfig /all > c:\ip.txt' and hit enter. This willl write the ipconfig info to a text file called ip.txt located on the C: drive. Get that file copied to a PC with innerweb access and cut and paste the info here. I will look at it and may be able to tell you if the machine is actually connecting or not.

The way I'm reading the original question it sounds like your set up to use dialup if nothing else is found. If that's the case go to the Connections tab in "Control Panel > Internet Options". Set it to "never dial a connection" and tell us if there is anything in the "Dial up and Virtual Private Network Settings" box.

After that you'll only be dealing with the wireless card and can troubleshoot without other connections interfering.

Can you ping the router (usually 192.168.1.1)? If no we'll T/S the wireless card setup
If yes, can you ping www.yahoo.com or 209.131.36.158? If no post your IPCONFIG /ALL output.
Also check whether authentication to your providers network is handled by the router or the PC.
