Having spent some time at Cold Bay, Alaska we had a fool-proof way: Each "hut" had a post with a log chain hanging down outside. If the chain was straight out it was too windy; hanging down at a 45 deg. angle, normal day. Hanging straight down..forget it, wind never stops--go back to bed!

That makes it rather difficult to drive your truck out to the middle of the lake doesn't it? Also seems like it wouldn't do a very good job of killing off the venomous snakes, scorpions, lizards, killer bees, and the like. We'll be sure to keep the poor unfortunate southerners in our prayers when we're having some good character building -30 degree windchill.

I pray for a mere 5 snowdays this winter because if we have more they are making us come to school on saturdays to make up. any lawyers here?

I'm the one that voted "I live in OZ". We have mild winters in Hawaii. You snow birds should visit us during the winter, hope the air fare goes down by then.

They say the 24 hour forecasts are only 70% accurate. But they want to predict the weather for the next SEASON ? Cmon now. They don't have a chance. I'll take the farmer's almanac any day.

These 10-day forecasts......what are they ? It's guaranteed to NOT be that ? The temps end up being off by 10 degrees and whether it's going to rain a week from now completely changes from one day to the next. Why even publish it ?

I'm a pilot but sure never look at the weather more than a few hours out with much of an expectation of accuracy.

Depends on how the Niners, Raiders and Kings do and right it is looking like a long cold winter. I how we get a wet winter with a lot of snow in the Sierra's or we could be in for a bad year next and the dried up yards will not be from just the Foreclosed and empty homes.

Since I firmly believe most rodents are more accurate than most meteorologists, I'd say it is going to be a rough winter. We've caught 7 mice in the house and garage already this year, and it hasn't started getting cold yet. We average 3 or 4 a year.

12" of snow yesterday, 4" of snow today, and several other accumulations the last few weeks. We're on track to break last year's near-record setting snowfalls.

And tomorrow we get super-low wind chills.

Unless things do a complete 180, I'd say the National Weather Service's supercomputers have been outdone by The Farmer's Almanac's caterpillars and sunspots.

Growing up in Northern Minnesota next day forecasting was easy. Whatever it was in Winnipeg it would be like that tomorrow.

Here on the coast we are expecting a cold dry winter. That being relative, that is.... Cold here is between 30 and 40, we got a freeze once or twice last winter and tho we had snow on the beach early last week the roses are still blooming. As for dry, well we average between 70 and 100 inches of rain a season, looks like it will be hard to make the 70 this year and that means that kayaking will not be that good come spring. Inland on the western slopes of the Cascades there is now just enough snow for skiing and we can see some white in the tops of the Siskiyou's foothills.

Bill on the Sunny Oregon Coast, where we only got 1.7" of rain last night.

                            Weather

Here in Southeast Kansas, they forecasted the month of December to be our worst winter month. Since there is only 10 days left, I hope they are right. We have has some light freezing rain, about 1/4 inch of sleet, and a 58 degree drop in temperature in about 8 hours. Currently it is 8 degrees after a high of 17 today. It is supposed to get down to around 4 tonight, but this is supposed to be the coldest night of the week, and it got down to 2 last night. Brrr!

We got 12" plus of snow, below normal temps. You decide!

Lucky us, the windchill tonight is supposed to be -30 below! The furnace has been running virtually nonstop all day and it's still cold in here...

I can't even imagine going to the Bears game tomorrow! Almost makes me glad I don't have tickets!
