    Snow

We've had a few flurries, but nothing much so far. The prediction is for a winter storm watch beginning tomorrow afternoon. I've always lived in an area that had snow in the winter, and I wonder if any of our members have never seen snow??

It's not that I've never seen it... It's that I've seen all I ever want to see, TYVM... It's great piled up on a postcard, but not piled up on your car. And slush is a different animal entirely...

I'm with you, Uncle! A childhood in South Dakota got snow, and frostbite, and months of grey bleakness, pretty thoroughly out of my system.

That's an understatement for Buffalo. A good buddy of mine lived there. I swear they don't bother with the plows until it gets 6" deep or so.

              snow

We had a dusting of snow right before Thanksgiving, but it was gone in about 2 hours. Last year we had a lot of snow, but nothing like we had when I was a kid. I hate snow, but I will take it any day over freezing rain. We missed the big ice storm last year, but near here there was devasating icing with some people out of power for a 2 to 3 weeks. A lot of farm sheds were crushed by ice sleet/ice/snow buildups.

2 Winters in Quantoco, VA having to shovel the snow off 5,000' of runway lights, a year in Iceland, another in Stillwater, OK, and one winter in Denver. Had enough that I moved south when I retired!

Born and raised in Columbus, OH and remember the Blizzard of '78 and plenty of snow during the winter. Spent a year or so in Erie, PA and learned what "Lake Effect Snow" was. Sure was pretty, but rather see it on TV now. Not too much snow falling in Houston

A couple years back we had a 'blizzard' in south Louisiana. We actually got about an inch on the ground on Christmas Day. My first White Christmas & I'm 50. It was really awful for traveling though. All the bridges & most roads were closed. My parents & I are separated by the Miss. River. Couldn't get to their house for Christmas.

Anyway....here in south Louisiana we see snow once in every 4 or 5 years. Usually just flurries. Very seldom do we have enough snow or the temperatures cold enough for build up.

We've got ~ 1/2" on the ground today...we'll see closer to 120" before we're through this winter.

Funny story though (funny now )...In 1999 Kodak Rochester hosted a worldwide conference for the other manufacturing sites around the world....at the end of February of course! We had guests from Mexico, Brazil, France, England, Canada, and Australia. The Mexican and Brazilians had never seen snow, and assumed we'd cancel any activities if it snowed . I assured them that we have excellent snow removal capability and lots of experience with heavy snowfall, and that life goes on....just a little slower. Many of the guests stayed on an additional week after the conference to visit individual operations not covered in the conference. Well, we got hit with a duzy and got 24" of heavy moist snow in 3 hours one Thursday afternoon, followed by 12" more overnight. The initial hit brought the entire city to gridlock...I've never seen anything like it in a town well versed with heavy snow. Parking lots, roads, expressways, on ramps, off ramps, etc., were all gridlocked. Many didn't try to leave, but most who did got stuck....it was as bad as you might imagine....total chaos. It was a very dangerous time because snow removal and emergency crews couldn't move either. Many people didn't get home. I was unsuccessful contacting the Brazilian and Mexican guests, who ended up fending for themselves. The city was in a state of emergency, unnecessary driving was forbidded (ticketable), and Kodak closed the following day (Friday). I was one of the few who managed to get home by leaving early and hitching a ride with a friend in a 7100# 4x4....God must have chosen our route because we were very fortunate to find a road not totally blocked with cars, though we passed hundreds and hundreds of abandoned cars! It was surreal b/c we didn't see people, only empty cars in unusual spots! By the time I got back to work on Monday, most guests had abandoned their rental cars and gotten rides to the airport any way they could. I spent Monday hunting down rentals from various hotels and company parking lots, and returning them to Enterprise!

So now the Brazilian and Mexican guests have seen snow....lots and lots of snow! (I guess their concerns were founded afterall!)
Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

We had 3-7" of snow 2 weeks ago already... 3" in the valleys and 7" on the hills. They are forecasting 1-3" of snow/sleet and ice tonight through early monday. Winter is early and global warming my...

A typical winter storm in SoCal will bring snow down to about 4,000', turning to rain below that.

It's quite common to meet a native Californian who has seen snow on the hills, but has never experienced a snowfall.
