Now I'm embarrassed. MY lack of context and the provocative nature of this thread, led me to imply that I favor the strict interpretation of the rules. My intent was to, pardon the expression, play devil's advocate.
Like cwsmith, my first thought when I read Alex' Franke's post was "ding... ...NOAH!" I would not be offended nor think twice were I to see the ark reference in a post.
I respect, but am not concerned with, the beliefs of others and can't understand why someone should be concerned with mine. I feel that there is a time and place for everything and if you've found your way to a place such as this then you're here to read, write, share knowledge and learn about woodworking. To drive the conversation to other emotionally charged and divisive topics is to due a disservice to the others that are here for that same reasons. Having said that, in any sufficiently large group, there will be a minority that are compelled to vigorously espouse a particular viewpoint, be it spiritual, political or even a preferred dovetail technique. I've yet to be offended here and intend to continue ignoring anything that might change that.
Like it says under my name, I'm a forum newbie. While I've lurked off and on for several years, I only recently joined in order to PM LCHIEN for a copy of the FAQ. Once here I became enthralled by the community and all that I've learned here. I sincerely hope that I have not overreached or offended any of you veterans.
I'm gettin' out of here and going back to "Bargain Alerts" and "Shop Setup, Layout and Design".

Some Random Ramblings no particular order!!!
I have been around on the INTERNET for a VERY long time. Lets just say that years ago I could read every post to every forum on the INTERNET and only spend an hour or so a day doing it. Heck can't even do that on this one alone.
Have seen many forums go under because people got upset with seeing some of the arguments / heated discussions going on. After a while it turns people off and they stop visiting / posting in that forum. When I first joined here, I was glad to see that religion and politics were not allowed. Figured it would be around for a while, and a nice place to visit.
Heated discussions that normally ruin a forum are the same heated discussion in the real world (politics, religion, gun control, birth control, abortions, global warming, world hunger, etc.). These topics have about an even number of people on both sides, about the same amount of evidence / proof / experts / etc on both sides.
If a topic is a hot debated topic in real life, it will also be in the forums. We all hear / see / read enough of both sides in the real world. Can't we have a place to go that we don't have to worry about this. I would rather see a discussion on Oil Base verses Water Base, or Thin Kerf verses Thick Kerf etc.
The mods here do a great job. Being one is not easy (been there done that) there are a lot of GRAY areas, that are constantly shifting. It's like raising a kid, you tell them not to lie. Then the next day you tell the kid not to tell mom, even is she ask (that you stopped at the jewelry store for a gift for her b-day). Then the kid asks isn't that lying to mom, and you said not to lie..... OR the kid needs to be home by 8:00 PM. they come home at 8:01 pm you let it slide, then it's 8:02 pm you let it slide, but after a while you have to say enough is enough. The enough might be at 8:10 pm or 8:30 depending on the circumstances (late starting homework, or missed the flight to Rome).
Some things cross the line more than other things. How much they cross the line various from person to person, moment to moment, mood to mood. That is were a mod has to make a decision, by them asking for each others opinions that gives them a chance to rethink it themselves, get a different look on things, cool down from something that hit them wrong at the wrong time. And most importantly gets a second (or more) view on things.
There are many posts, even a simple 1 line that can be taken the wrong way, depending on the mood you are in. One of the main reasons emoticons / smilies / etc are popular / and used.
There are many times that we say things that we didn't mean to say, things didn't come out the way we wanted, implied the wrong thing, read the question / answer wrong, etc. You have to remember that other people could make the same mistake.
Things need to be read / taken with some common sense, which it seems at times is not too common. Everything that is said it not meant at a direct line / slam to wards you. If you take it that way then maybe you were doing something that triggered that guilt to kick in.

Though I haven't been as active lately, I've been around this forum for a long time as well. Longer than about 7200 others. It's always been a great place to discuss lots of things and it has stayed amazingly true to it's mission. That's because of a few simple things that Sam, who I know has very deep convictions on a number of those topics, has asked be avoided.
I've met a number of members in person and consider them friends as well as a number who I only know from on-line chats and posts. I can't say that about any other forum I know of. There has to be others but I think we can all stipulate that they are rare. While other similar forums have come and gone or morphed into a virtual private club this forum has flourished. In my mind that can only be attributed to Sam's leadership and the Mod's who work hard to maintain that atmosphere.
I think it's a special place. In most other forums this would have turned into a flame war by page 2. It's been a civil and interesting discussion here and we're on page 9.
It's Sam's house and Sam's rules. I like and respect that and don't think it's much to ask for from the members.Rick

Figured I might as well jump in with my .02.
This is a great site with members who are generally respectful of each other. Now I personally like to discuss politics, religion, etc. IMO just to say I belong to a certain party or religion and here's what I think is OK, but to proselytize or badger someone from a different group is wrong
But we all realize not everyone can play by the rules and things can get out of hand. There are other sites where you can taunt your opponents on these issues, so let's keep this one polite.Jeff
