    Career or Hobby ?

Just curious......how many of you guys work in this field ? Or a related one ?

Is it just a hobby for most ? Is there money to be made in this ?

Not at all trying to imply that my skills at this point warrant any type of paycheck ! haha Just wanted to take an informal poll.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Hobby for me too, but I may make a few flea market items after I retire.

Woodworking is a pass time for me.

My hobby is my family, my career is what it is.

It was a fellow form member (Rod, Pappy...heck one of those wise ones) who said it "...keeps me out of and from behind bars...". That is very true in my case.
All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible

It's a hobby for me, makes my relatives happy for Christmas, Birthdays, etc. It also keeps me from losing my money in the pool hall. Bill

If those are my two choices, I guess it's a hobby for me.
I'm just to tight to buy something, when I can do it myself, and get the size /dimension I want, and sometimes it actually turns out nice

I dunno, did you ever consider it might be cheaper to play pool?

Have you added up the cost of your tools lately?

Hobby for me, for now - never know if it might be extra income come retirement.

But, while I am not making money on this, I am definitely saving money on this. Labor is so darn expensive. Constructing a built-in closet organizer cost me the price of a couple plywood sheets, some hardwood and hardware. I am scared to think what a pro would charge.

And this is not just woodwork/carpentry - plumbing, HVAC, electrical, you name it. If you can do it yourself, you get to save major $$$.

Was in woodworking and cabinetmaking for over 30 years, as a profession. Semi retired now.

One of 2 hobbies. The other one is cheaper.

If you are not extremely careful, it could turn into something big. Good luck.

It helps keep me sane. I've got to much time with nothing to do since I retired with the LOML still working. After six years i'm running out of things to do.

Started as a hobby and has turned into a way to make a littel bit of extra cash. The extra cash mostly buys more wood or tools, though.

Woodworking is a hobby for me, but working with wood is my job. I have worked at a hardwoods mill for 3 years. We finish wood not rough cut it. We take rough cut and make flooring, molding and S4S lumber. The only perk working there is I can get free wood ( cut backs and such ). I've always lived by the DIY philosophy. Whether it be automotive repair, home improvement or building things, be it with wood or metal. So far gettting the tools for woodworking has been less cost effective than other DIY things I've done, but hopefully someday I'll break even.
