    Krispy Kreme

In about 22 seconds They say that they can make enough donuts to equal the height of the Empire State Building.

How many donuts would that be? On the History Channel they didn't say, and I don't have a clue. Bill

The empire state building is 1250 feet tall.
A donut is approx 1.25" in my humble estimation. If this was a serious project I'd go buy 100 donuts and take an average measurement (just before eating them so I didn't accidentally measure one twice).

So the empire state building is 12000 donuts high.

Actually the KK presskit on their website has a fun facts page, says that they make enough dounts to equal the empire state building height in 22 seconds as you quoted, another fact says they make 7.5 million donuts a day and 2.7 billion (a US Billion apparently) per year (that does work out correctly into about 360 days).

However, that works out to only 87 donuts per second which means that in 22 seconds they will only make 1910 donuts. Seriously short of an empire state building if the dounts are 1.25" thick.

Now I've eaten a few and I know the donuts are not 8" thick so even end-to-end instead of stacking is not going to work.

So their facts don't line up. Assuming the 7.5million per day is correct, it will take 139 seconds to make that stack of 12000, not 22 seconds.

You would have to figure the compression factor of the donuts when you stack them. The ones on the bottom would keep blowing out and you might never get to the top.
Maybe we should get Thom2 in on this, being he is our research ass.

I'd guess they don't run at full capicity 24hrs a day. Maybe they have the ability to produce enough donuts to equal the empire state building in 22 seconds when they are running at top capicity but figuring in the slow times they only produce 2.7 billion in a year. In any case I'd be willing to help them up their count if they'd put a store in Shawnee

                  Quick everyone,

Duck and Cover, Loring's at it again .

I wonder if we asked Loring what time it is, will he tell us how to build a clock

Have you considered that the typical donut at sea level might be a different size than a similar donut at, say, 5000 ft. altitude? Have you taken into account the additional variables that might exist at different humidities? Because it's the Empire State Building, are we talking New York standard donuts, or the national average? Fresh donuts, or stale? If they are actually stacked, the ones on the bottom would undoubtedly be crushed by the weight, and add very little to the overall height. Unless they are indeed stale, in which case you couldn't crush them with a hydraulic press. How much extra height is added if they are glazed?

                      now that you ask.....

But seriously, I do have a problem with people throwing out facts and figures meant to impress, Other people go wow, I didn't know that, that's amazing, and I go, wait a minute, that's not physically possible or its inconsistent with the other facts you gave...

As an engineer, its my job to check using engineering, math, and facts and figures to see what is possible and what is not before we actually waste time building something. Or buy something that the manufacturers (or politicians) claim will work. We are bombarded with bad facts, in my opinion. Enough of that....

Whoa, we're only talking about going up to 1250 feet.
