Veritas /Lee Valley just sent me this ad for a marking wheel with a coarse and fine adjustment

I love it. It is a vintage design they copied and technically it looks wonderful.

But I haven't really felt a need for such a thing and its crazy priced at more than $72 so I'll just admire it from afar.

I have one of the Veratis' original through Lee Valley. And rarely use it. I have a mechanic's rolling tool chest full of small but quality woodworking tools, and it happens to be too far away from wherever I am constructing most things.

I think it was less than $15 when I bought it 25+ years ago. I think I started buying from Lee Valley back in the mid 1990's.

I have a simple WoodRiver wheel marking gauge from Woodcraft for which I paid around $20. I just looked today and it is listed at $52. It makes the price of the veritas seem less outrageous, or both prices are outrageous, I'm not sure which.

Among other problems it only has marking to 1/8" divisions
Its marking wheel rolls but does not cut like others so tis mark is weak
The marking wheel is loose and wobbles because it rolls
The marking wheel is not held with a flat head recessed screw but with a pan head screw so you can't bottom the wheel against a groove to set the marking to the depth of the groove
