    Keyhole Router Bit

Setup the router for a Keyhole bit tonight - need a quick slot.

    Handy little suckers.

    Had to remember the technique:
Stop blocks at beginning and end
    Plain straight fence
Start router with workpiece positioned over router bit.
Plunge cut with workpiece at the right stop block,
slide (use stop blocks) to the left (normal grooving direction)
Return to original location of plunge cut (slide to the right).
    Turn off router
    Lift carefully off bit.

If you don't return to the original location, then the bit will be pretty much buried in the cut and impossible to get out as it won't want to slide.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

this one was the DeWalt DW6660 router bit. Don't see it for sale anymore buts lots of ones like it.
for most screws you want a 3/8" major Dia. and a 1/4" minor diameter

Handy little suckers, aren't they? I do all my picture frames, plaques and any other wall hangings with a keyhole bit with a horizontal slot when I can. This keeps the project flat against the wall and, second, allows you to adjust the level sliding it side to side on the mounting screw. Long pieces like a coat rack get 2 slots so I have to b careful to get the screws level and spaced correctly. Favorite bit is a Whiteside #3050.
