    The I saw the price....

I have never found a stud finder that really works. I got this in an email from DeWalt. Finally one that should work, just a little high $$$ for home use!

When i'm in my right mind, i'd agree with you Pappy. Then there's anytime i'm working in the living room or dining room of our 1920-built house. Those two rooms still have the original plaster, more plaster and 1/2" drywall--rest of the house has been gutted at various times and is now just sheetrock. There have been times when i'd have EASILY given $300 to hit a stud!!

On the other hand--for not much more money we could strip out the living room (the worst offender), rock it and make it so my old reliable Zircon unit could work. Oh what a mess it would be!!

I bought the older version of this model a couple years back on clearance for $9. Has worked very well for me, and find the LCD display useful.

Looks cool. It would be really impressive if it worked on plaster.

it would be a lot more impressive if it would hang the picture for you --- straight and level and into a stud.

If used properly, stud finders do just that. Some detect metal, while others detect differences in density. Of course in lieu of using one, one could do the tapping method (BTDT), or a small finish nail and a hammer (BTDT)

            .

How well does it work on lath and plaster. All the ones I've ever used seem to be hit and miss. Does it work to find pipes, electrical, etc as well?

Only used it on sheetrock so can't say for sure but I like the way the LED's light up as you approach the stud then end up with I think 3 lit so you know where center is.

Reminds me of shopping for a laser measure to replace my trusty Bosch that I've been using for 5 years ......

I ran across this awesome unit:

and nearly crapped my pants at the price

Stud Finders don't work that well for me.

I've never seen one that would light up when I placed it on my bicep........

Oh wait - that's not what it's for?

Some of the walls in our house have tung and groove wood siding. The different density where they connect plus the nails seem to throw of any stud finder I have tried to date.

I used the tap and finish nail routine over the weekend. I have a unit that sometimes works but it was at the other house. I was screwing a bathroom cabinet to the studs so I only had to find a couple and could hide the holes with the cabinet. I have a bunch of baseboard to reattach when the flooring is down and I had the girls leave marks for the studs at the bottom where the baseboard will cover it.

The unit I use is cheap and works as long as it is drywall over the studs and the studs are straight where you are looking. I put a cabinet in the wall once and was surprised to find a stud in the center of the hole when I removed the drywall. It was so twisted the stud finder didn't see it.

I also removed a kitchen cabinet hung on the 3 inch PVC waste pipe from the upstairs bathrooms once. It was hung by a "professional".

I don't think there is a perfect solution - but I haven't tried the more expensive models so maybe I'm wrong.

                            Jim
