Jet 16/32 sander needs help. Should I grab it?

Simply put, I found a 16/32 for a steal of a price at $120.00. However the main casting that the tension knob / rod attaches to is plain out busted out. I do not find anywhere that this is a replaceable part, and I don't know if this is something I can have welded back up and get to service...

Anybody here know if that casting is weldable or is this thing just a pile of parts...

Of course it may be worth grabbing just for the motors and platen come to think of it...

can you replace the casting with a MDF DIY box? are the bearings installed in the casting? Is there enough room for you to allow more thickness in a MDF or plywood box?

Are you sure you can't get parts?

All I can tell you is this ... I already own a Performax 22/44, but if found a 16/32 for $120, even with the problem you describe, I'd buy it first and figure out how to deal with the problem second. (This assumes that the described problem is the ONLY problem, of course.)

If the casting is cast iron, welding will be difficult requiring preheating and postheating to prevent tension from popping the repair. If the area around the break is substantial enough, you could put a patch plate over it of sufficient thickness and bolt it into the main casing. A pic is worth a thousand words on this one, but $120 for something like that is a steal if that is the only issue. Do you have the room?

Look at page C on the ereplacements link. Part 41 is the shroud, listed at $175, if that is the part you need. With shipping that would make the whole deal ~$300.

I'd make the room! I was already working on a shop build sander...

I am having schedule problems getting out to see it. (The sellers, not mine), I am seriously considering grabbing it for no other reason than the motors and conveyor / platen. I can rig something up...
