    dewalt 735 shelix cutterhead

Hey everyone. I'm going to purchase a cutter head from holbern tomorrow. Is there still a discount for forum members? Also does anyone have any installation tips? Thanks.

I installed one of Holbern's helix cutter heads about a year or so ago and wonder why I didn't do so sooner. Installation was a snap and went very well - just follow the instructions carefully. Having the bearings pre-installed on the heads is a major plus. If you need to tap the cutter head out of (or in to) its mounting, use a hardwood block and do so gently.

By the way, I decided to install new third party knives on the factory head and keep it around for a spare.

You will also wonder why you didn't install the helix cutter head sooner.

    Regards, Steve

I believe this is still in effect:

Well I got it. Instructions weren't included, but Brian from holbren came through like a champ! Took at most an hour to install. I'm still getting use to the sound. Before,it was awful. Now its reasonable. This is brilliant! Holbren is the best!

Well, all is installed. Now I've got some scalloping going on. Any ideas about adjustments? The finish is outstanding, just needs a little tweaking ...

If, by scalloping, you mean the appearance of very small "waves" along the length of the piece, I believe it is not possible to completely eliminate them. At least I haven't been able to do so. The effect can be minimized by taking very small cuts, especially as you approach the desired thickness of the piece. I rarely (almost never) lower the cutters by one full turn -- more likely I do so by 1/2 turn, then by 1/4 turn as I reach the desired thickness of the board. Of course, sanding will always be needed as a final step.

It may take a little longer to get down to the thickness you want, but you will find that it was well worth the time.

                  Regards, Steve

Well I've taken a week to get use to the new cutterhead. I am very pleased. Fine tuning the cut was simple, by taking very shallow cuts for the final plane. Once again great advice and help. Thanks so much! I love my shelix!
