what kind of wax for planer/jointer table?

    Hi,
I bought a rigid planer/jointer and right away got a few spots of corrosion on the table when I left some wood stacked on it. I read on this forum mention of waxing the table. Can anyone tell me what kind of wax and where can I buy it?

I use a can of Johnson's paste wax. You only need a little, but be sure to clean it off before using the tool so it doesn't get into the wood and block the finish.

Edit (more info): You can get it at just about any home center like Home Depot or Lowes, or places lie Ace or even Sears. Look for a yellow can with a red stripe -- about the diameter of a CD.

Paste wax is good for making a cast iron surface slippery but there are better products out there for rust protection. I happen to prefer Bostik TopCote for rust protection but there are others that work just as well. My method is a two step method. First, I apply the TopCote following the directions on the can. Once that's done, I then apply a coat or two of Johnson's Paste Wax over the TopCote to make the surface even more slick then what the TopCote does. Climate is a big factor in keeping down rust but this method works well for me.

I use Minwax paste was on mine, and that's only because I couldn't find the Johnsons the day I picked the can up.

Don't know where your location is and how much humidity you have to deal with, but Dave makes a good point. I'll use Boeshield T-9 initally and the wax later on after it's good and dry. Every once in a while I might do another coat of T-9 after cleaning if rust is starting to develop again. Maybe once a year, if that, on most stuff for me. Waxing happens a lot more often. I haven't tried out the topcoat products yet.

I use Minwax floor wax on mine, mainly because I got a bunch of cans for free. Spread liberally, then wipe off the excess. I find rubbing hard with a clean cloth leaves a nice slick surface, and I haven't had any issues with wax rubbing off on wood.

I use it on the surface of my BT, too.

Thanks for all the advice, I imagine everything I need will be at Home Depot. I live in South Florida and everything in the garage rusts from the year round humidity...

Boeshield T-9 is a really good surface prep for rust prevention on steel and iron tool surfaces. Woodworking stores carry it but I don't see it at Lowes or HD.
Then I use paste wax for frequent maintenance and surface treatment on all iron and aluminum surfaces.

I had trouble locating Johnson's paste wax, only to find out recently the Home Depot stocks in with their other household cleaning products. All the while, I've been looking in the paint dept. where the stains and other finishes are.

The Boeshield T-9 is available from a few sources I guess. I don't have a Woodcraft locally, so ordered it from www.leevalley.com It is also available at www.Rockler.com (I have no affiliation with either.)

                I hope this helps,

I've used Johnson's Paste wax on all of my metal surfaces with success.

However, I'm intrigued by the Bostik TopCote & Boeshield T-9 options specifically for my jointer - which is the only tool located in my garage (wont fit downstairs) and subsequently exposed to the wetness of winter and summer - the cast iron is always showing a slight amount of rust . My tools in the basement do well with Johnson's Paste wax alone, no rust - but it's pretty dry down there.

                  Thanks for the suggestions......

Johnsons Paste Wax. Yes Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, Do It Best, and even Kroger (the grocery store) carries the stuff, it's with all the floor waxes and stuff by the mops....

I use it on all my cast iron with good success as long as I remember to reapply... I kind of let it slide for a while and had to clean up my jointer bed and band saw table... Not fun.

I use either straight carnauba wax for non-cast iron items or Boeshield for the cast iron surfaces. It has served me well thus far. The only rust I've seen was when I dripped sweat on the jointer outfeed table and didn't notice, had a nice round rust spot the next day.

Boeshield T-9 is available at West Marine stores, too. They're everywhere. When I cleaned up the rust on my 8" jointer, I used brown Scotchbrite pad and lots of Boeshield. Came up pretty shiny.

Are you people trying to say that tools aren't supposed to be REDDISH-BROWN???????

The little cans of the T-9 will go a long ways. I first got the product in the three bottle Small Tool Care Kit; it comes with a 4 oz. bottle of their Bit & Blade cleaner and their Rust Free spray. I don't like the Rust free spray that much as it can discolor the metal like other rust removal products can. The Bit & Blade cleaner is really handy. I use it all the time on router bits and occasionally on my saw blades while they're still on the saw.

I know that Woodcraft in the Westgate Mall carries TopCote as I've purchased some there. I'm pretty sure that I've also seen it at Workbench Tools too.
