Air Cleaner -- Harbor Freight $180

Every time I take the leaf blower and clean out the shop/garage I think about getting a room air cleaner but there is always something to spend that $300 on that's not an air cleaner. Today I see that Harbor Freight has one for $180 that includes a remote control. I have to look the next time I am there to see how it's built.

Anyone with experience with it? I wonder if I get two if it would suck the cat hair out of the house....

With a filtration rating of 5 microns it probably won't catch the really fine sawdust. My Jet has a filtration rating of 1 micron.

Ah yes, that does make a difference. Wonder if it's just the final filter? But a HEPA final filter may really kill the airflow. Seems that there really is no free lunch.... but cat hair now, that much larger than 5 microns....

I believe the sale lasts until September 22nd, but Grizzly has the G0572 on sale for $219.00 + shipping ($238.00 after shipping and oversize fee). Mine should arrive on Monday (UPS shows it's in Houston!).

I am not a Harbor Freight detractor, but their air filter just seems insufficient for, well... filtering...

Anybody know if you can replace the filter with a 1 micron?

one thing i find helpful in a air cleaner is to have it on a timer rather than on a remote.
I set it for 2-3 hours past where i think i am going to be working so it continues clearing the air after i go to the house for the night.

When the dust gets airborne it spreads rapidly.
Altho the air cleaner clears the equivalent air volume of the room 15 times per hour (once per four minutes) that doesn't mean it gets every cubic foot of air. Maybe it gets 25% each time with 75% escaping so running it 2 hours gets 30 changes of air so at 25% so after 30 changes you get (escaping) .75 x .75 x .75........ x .75 x .75 (or .75^30) or about .02% remaining.
            Loring in Katy, TX USA

I perked up when I saw it but the 5 microns killed it for me. I have to believe that a 1 micron filter would kill the air flow.

I am considering the Jet AFS-400. $199 from Woodcraft with free shipping promotion.

Well I talked myself into it and pulled the trigger on the AFS-400.

I had looked at it earlier but decided against it because at the time there were no replacement filters available. Jet has corrected this obvious problem and it again seems perfect for my needs.

Things that sold me on this model:
                1 micron two-stage filtering
                Remote control with timer
More than adequate for my tiny little shop
                Price

I had promised myself I would buy no more tools until after I had put the ones I already have to better use. But surely safety equipment should be an exception right?

Actually, since I have allergies that are triggered by wood dust, I am hoping that this purchase will increase my shop time. I always wear a full-face respirator when I am machining wood indoors, but I start to feel stuffy just by stepping into the shop. My hope is that leaving this running for a couple hours after I am done, it will be safe to enter the next time. If needed, i can also use the remote to run it for a while before I enter too.

I'll let you know what I think after it arrives and I have put it to use.

Think I can argue for both a dust collector and an air cleaner on the ground they will be used to de-cat-hair the house?

Hmmm. Might be worth a try!

Now that I have both a DC and ambient filter for the shop, LOML has decreed that I need to get an air purifier for the house. Might not be a bad idea... our 2 pets, and with BIL staying with us, with his 2 cats things can get hairy and messy...

If you have forced air heat/cooling it's not at all hard. One of the electrostatic cleaners with good filters does wonders. I did that with the first two houses but since then haven't had forced air. I also put a cheep filter behind the return air vents in the rooms that got the most cat hair and vacuumed them about every other day. You would never know from cat hair that, with kittens, we at one time had 17 cats. That got old real fast!

now finding two cats and one dog to be a bit much.
