doesn't HF sell motors?
That would not be my first, second or third choice of jointers.

is the existing motor TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled)?
Does the HF you think you want to buy have a TEFC motor?
Not sure a TEFC motor is called for, it'll help keep saw dust out of the motor but its not outdoors. I may be wrong but not all woodworking tools have TEFC motors???
Newer, high end tools may have TEFC motors, but older, lower end equipment makes do with regular motors. Just blow it out ocassionally.
Question - was your old jointer working well, just has a bad motor, or do you WANT to replace it?Last edited by LCHIEN; 08-09-2010, 08:29 PM.

I had that jointer. Picked it up for $100 off CL and sold it for the same. It will do the job but takes a lot of fiddling to get it to run true. The fence is a bad set up, too.
Replace your motor unless the Jet has other issues.Don, aka Pappy,

Believe it or not LChien the old jet motor was tefc! Just the motor to my knowledge is bad, but I really didn't get to use it much before it blew. I also need to invest in a dial caliper to really check out the unit's squareness and blade height.I think in straight lines, but dream in curves

I believe it, there are some advantages for woodworking to offset the added cost.
So I do believe in the HF dial gauges and digital calipers, they seem to be an excellent bargain in my opinion.

Not all (but most) woodworking equipment has a TEFC motor, even industrial stuff, I don't know why. I've serviced some that were open drip proof (ODP) but I always replaced it with a TEFC.Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Thomas EdisonComment

How about rebuilding the motor. When I taught @ the HS shop, I sent my bandsaw & jointer motor to a local electrical motor rebuilder. He used to come to my shop and remove the motor. After he rebuilt it, he would install it on the machine. The cost was alot less than buying a new motor.Comment

You've probably already confirmed that the motor was really shot, and doesn't just need a new capacitor, but I thought I'd mention it just to be certain...
How about a used or surplus motor off Ebay? They generally run about half the price of a new one.Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

I agree. There are a few electric motor repair shops here that will rebuild a motor and also have new/rebuilt for sale. You might just check your area first for a motor. I would prefer the Jet over the HF.

I don't have that one from HF, but I have an older import version that is very similar. Many of the parts are exactly like the ones I checked out at HF. Like pappy said, the fence leaves a lot to be desired. It is a knockoff of the older Rockwell designs. It clamps down on the end, which can promote fence movement and twisting. The only plus for that type of fence is that the footprint of the tool is smaller, not having the fence support sticking out the back. I'd would definitely not get another one. Well, maybe if the price was right. I got mine for $50. I wouldn't pay a penny more for something similar if I needed to do it again.ErikComment

LChien, HF does have motors but they are not the tefc kind I think I would require.
