    Tool gloat--Ryobi WDS1600 drum sander

I hate gloating but I just gotta' this time. I've been looking for a drum sander
for a couple years now. I do a fair amount of veneer work and want to start
    making my own.

The price of a new Performax sander was just too rich and the thought of
buying used never really appealed to me. However, this was too good to pass
up. I know people have gotten better deals but this was just right to me.

Just happened to be searching Craigslist when I saw this Ryobi sander posted
for $250. I knew you guys here liked it and it got a good review from FWW a
few years ago. The seller inherited it from his dad and claimed he only used
it a few times. He only had the sander and no manual, etc. I found the
manual posted here. My wife and I drove the 50+ miles to his house and it
looked used but ran well. The belt tracked true. The drum was parallel to the
table, etc. I didn't haggle with him and gave him $250 cash. Seller also had a
bunch of other Ryobi stuff (BT3K), too.

So I think I'll take a little break from shop cleaning and build a mobile
    base for this.

          Good buy!

That is about what I paid for mine off the Cummins truck. I think I got the last one they ever sold. It was the demo/display and had some problems. A call to Ryobi took care of the needed parts, free. Several years later it is still running fine and I have never regreted spending the $$$.

Awesome find. Wouldn't mind stumbling across one at that price myself. Be sure to post some pics of the work you produce with it.

                      ....

.... i hate to do this.....

but i just picked one up two days ago off of craigslist with 3 extra spools of sand paper, never-opened- stand in the box...

$175.... and only a 43 mile drive each way!

looks like we've both go to figure out now how/where to put these magnificent machines. it's really going to screw up my floorplan layout... but i guess that's a GOOD problem to have!

Hey, I guess you win the You Suck prize on this one. That is a great deal!
I am a little glad mine didn't include the stand because then I would feel
obliged to use it. I like the base I built better. It matches the height of my
TS and bench. I do need to find a source for some paper, though.

Have fun with yours. I'm loving mine so far. So much better than using the
                        ROS.

agreed about the stand. i really can't *stand* (pun intended) those tapered steel frame stands. the only one i've got left in my shop is my craftsman radial arm saw... and i've got to find a way to get rid of it. they waste so much space and do so little....

so.... your ts's outfeed goes across the rubber belt? or... do you lay a sheet of hardboard down on it and then it's level?

i'll have to make one too....

                          and a rolling mitersaw station....

the list goes on and on.

                            heyya....

is that your stand for it in the picture? it's hard to tell since it's so close up.

.... i can't sleep tonight. i've got a miter saw station and now a blasted stand for this sander that i have to build.... and i can't stop ideas from running through my head....

i really like this guy's version....

Don't remeber seeing this mentioned, so a word of caution. DO NOT run these sanders without dust collection attached. The drum fills with sawdust and gets unbelievably out of balance.
