    Shopvac motor replace or

My 10gal wet/dry Shopvac motor slowed down to a crawl. I took it apart and the brushes are worn out. Shopvac sells the motor assembly for $55 + shipping. Should I buy the assembly or just go get a whole new vaacum. What do you think? I sure like my UltraPro but now it's dead.

It is probably a toss up. Go look at what kind of replacement is available for $ 55 then make the call.

I think you will probably repair yours.

Can you replace the whole thing (size and feature wise) for that same amount?

if its only brushes then you might be able to replace them either with shopvac replacement parts or go to your local ACE hardware and see if they have some brushes for motors you can use. shouldbe inexpensive but some work.

For $55 or not a whole lot more you can probably get a whole new Vac with new accessories and everything new.

          +1 Loring.

Changing the brushes usually ain't that hard and a WHOLE lot cheaper.

            Shopvac Motor

You can probably get a new set of brushes from an electric motor supply company for about $10.00 Sure cheaper than replacing it all. There is a company here in Conway, SC. that most likely has them or can get them.
Conway Electric Motor 843 248-5302 Ask for David - the owner. He could ship to you. (hope it is okay to mention this business here).

Most ACE Hardware stores have a selection of Electric Motor brushes and bearings. If you are lucky you live by one that actually has "Helpful Hardware Folks"... Take your old burnt out brushes in and see if you can get replacements...

I personally would not go back with the ShopVac brand as the Ridgid has the lifetime service agreement. I love my 12 gallon Ridgid... Does a great job... But then again, Shop Vac is THE defacto standard for shop vacums as well. They just ticked me off with the 1.25" hose on my Shop Vac Hangup...

You may want to go to shopvac.com and send them an email.

I had a similar problem and sent them an email. I did not have a receipt, so I did not know the purchase date, but I was pretty sure it was older than the warranty period. So, I figured I would get a no-go response and went ahead and replaced the shopvac with a Rigid. Low and behold, 2 days later I get an email stating I have free replacement motor on its way.

So, now I have two vacs.

I took the motor out and the brushes do look wornout. I'll check Ace for the brushes as you guys suggested and also send Shopvac an email and see if they respond.

I sent Shop-vac Corp an email and this is the reply I received within 3 hours.

I sent you a no charge order number 278046 for a new power unit. This will arrive within 7-10 days. Keep the old one until you receive the new on then you can throw the old one out. If you have any questions feel free to email me. I got the motor assembly from Shopvac by Fedex on Saturday. BTW, I could not find the bushings anywhere. One motor shop said they can cut the pair for $25. Well, it survived 6 years of hard work in the shop. With the new assembly hopefully another 6 years.
                          Can't complain.

i assume you meant brushes, not bushings.

I must admit, I am rather impressed with Shop Vac's response on this... Nice way to snatch some P.R. in this little corner of the hobbyist world...
