    JT360 Safety Guard Question

Now the proud owner of this jointer (replacement for an HF Jointer) I have a question. Seems the rear edge of the safety guard sits 11/16" above the infeed table. So when face jointing a 3/4" board, once 1/16" is removed, on the next pass the board goes under the safety guard instead of pushing it out of the way. Is this normal? Should a board 11/16" thick or thinner pass under the guard? Guard is installed properly, checked several times. Thanks.

PS: Jointer works great. Craigslist for the HF model.

I'm not familiar with that jointer but that much gap can't be right.

I have been wanting that jointer, but had the chance to finally get my BT instead this pay period... I will keep watching this thread as that can be concerning. Let me know if you go through Delta for customer support how they are...

Thanks, that answered the question. I did do a search on the forum and came up blank. Guess I didn't use the right words to search on. The JT360 manual says 1/2" is the thinest to plane on the jointer.

with mine I make sure that the placement of the shoe holds open or pushes open the saftey guard if the material is marginally thin OR is i get the condition where the workpiece actually jams the safety guard - this sometimes happens on my JT360 if I've moved the fence forward so as to even the wear ont heblades when planing stock not as wide as 6".

Bsides catching the safety guard, planing thin stock (under 1/2" thick) raises the issue of whether it will really be straight and flat - being that it does not have enough stiffness to hold itself flat anyway. That's kind of a judgement call.

Thanks. Some of the wood that I face joint ends up around 5/8" thick sometimes and that would go under the cutterhead guard. I'll just be aware of this issue and make sure I always use the push blocks to ensure the guard is pushed out of the way. I just didn't want to remove the guard at any point so this method will work. I would agree that anything less than 1/2" would probably flex too much to joint anyway.
