I am using a similar apparatus now except w/o the baffle, and it's doing a fairly good job, but I like the baffle concept. However, in looking at the picture, why wouldn't the input elbow extend below the baffle? It looks like this would prevent the dust from entering the exit fitting. Also, what are the dimensions of the slot in the baffle?

The "slot" is 1.125" running around the circumference of the baffle plate for 240 degrees.

The idea behind the baffle, and the inlet line location, from what I can tell, is to keep the dirty air in a cyclonic motion on the outside surface of the can, as it goes around the can, and drops / slows down, it drops its load of chips and dust, in turn when the air is pulled back up on the far side, it gets sucked mostly back into the cyclone, air that is unladen, and light enough, exits the cyclonic stream via static lift, and goes on to the vac or dust collector. I know it sounds funny, but it seems to work very well in practice. If everything is cut and fitted right, you should have a cyclone that leaves very little in your vac and filter.

dbhost...new poster here. how critical is the orientation of the baffle relative to the 90deg angle fitting inside the can? it appears that the 240deg portion of the baffle is "behind" the elbow. is this correct and, if it is, is the distance from the rear of the elbow, between the lid and the baffle, to the beginning of the 1.125" slot in the baffle critical? thanks.
there's a solution to every problem.......you just have to be willing to find it.

Question on building Thien Cyclone Baffle

I'm considering building a Thien Cyclone Baffle, but have a few questions.

-I want to use it for my shop vac because when I sand, the fine clogs the filter in 15 minutes. Does the cyclone action seperate the very fine to keep the filter cleaner?

-Has anyone tried to put a second horizontal baffle between the inlet and suction to improve separation? Would increasing the distance of the two baffles improve separation efficiency?
