    Used Unisaw

I am offering a gentleman, who is moving to Florida for heath reasons, $500 for his delta 34-802 unisaw. I think it is about 10-15 years old. It has a 1.5 hp motor and a mobile base. It was only used for small scale model making so it has light use. I have a fence and he will sell the saw without the fence.

He seems offended by the offer and wants more like a thousand which I think is ridiculous. Is $500 a fair price for this saw without a fence, or am I too low?

    Thanks

I would think that $500 for a 1.5 HP model without fence is in the ballpark. Don't worry if he gets offended. He will call you unless he gets a better offer. Some people expect to keep something for a long time and get almost what it is worth new for some reason when the warranty has long expired and it has at least some degree of wear. Tell him competition is stiff these days. You can buy a new 3HP Grizzly cabinet saw with fence for $1000.

It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay, but I don't think you're offer is too far off what it's worth for a Uni with a small motor and no fence. Last year one very similar with a Biese fence and was in mint condition sold for $750 here. Good fences start in the $150 range and go easily over $300.

If you specifically want a Uni, you could offer whatever you're comfortable with but I sure wouldn't go too much higher. There are alot of capable new saws for $700 and up...

        ...keep us posted.

I think you are right on.

Your offer would be a good deal for you, but definately not "YOU SUCK".

You should go back and tell him you've reconsidered...and offer him $300

There was one listed earlier this week on the local Craigslist for $550 with a 52" Biesemeyer fence and a 3HP motor, really sweet looking saw. If I didn't have my Griz I would have been all over it.

            I paid $600 for a Griz 1023SLX with a 52" Unifence about a year ago.

$500 in my opinion is a very generous offer. A new 3HP motor for that saw is going to run you between $350 and $400 if you should ever want to upgrade. A Uni with a 1.5 HP motor is really nothing more than a hybrid in disguise.

If he doesn't like the offer, don't sweat it, you can get way more for your money.

He should be happy he won't have to move it to FLA! I think $500 is a great price to get for this saw. Some people have no idea of what things are worth. I see this on Craigslist all the time. Most recently I noticed someone wanting to sell a used mat cutter for twice as much as the cost of a new one.

Of course, none of this applies when I go to sell my lathe

Droc, I have no clue what a good value for this saw might be. But I have to wonder if you and/or the person you are trying to buy from is more hung up on the name "Unisaw" more than what it has to offer in way of specs? As been pointed out 1.5 HP motor is not that large, what else is it laking in? $500 or even a $1000 will get you far on a good NEW table saw.

Maybe this is a good time to step back and rethink the whole thing. How much do you want to spend, and what do you want or need out of the saw. What can you get for that same amount new? How important is a warranty on a new saw verses a 10 year old saw.

Saw someone on my local CL earlier this week selling a sears drill press for 160 bucks. I bought one new from sears in april for 100 bucks. It WAS on sale, but I'm pretty sure normal retail for the item was 120...

From now on, if I'm interested in an item, I'll make my offer. If they don't accept it, I'll move on a keep looking. Some people are just a bit too proud of their stuff.

I posted one a bit back about a guy who claimed to have a 12" Ridgid saw (at $800). Well he has since got the model number (though still claims it cost $1500), and FINALLY checked it out (after several people told him it wasn't a 12"). He reposted it today, down to $375.

Too many people post something, with the I'm gonna find that sucker attitude.

unless you are obsessed with that particular saw, best to move on. you can leave your number and ask him to call you if he reconsiders. lots of other fish in the ocean. best deals comes to those who are patient.

Well, thanks for all the replies. I went to his house as he was liquidating a life time of tools. He had some great things but all the large power tools except the unisaw were bought by one buyer. The saw is as new, and since he only made small models it can't have any wear. It has the base and extensions. I have a biesemeyer fence which I picked up at lowes for nothing so I didn't want his fence which was a computerized contraption he was trying to patent, for which he wanted more than the saw.

So I figured for 600 out on my end with the biesemeyer, and a nice, lightly used saw, I was getting a good deal. Plus I have a delta 34-388 12" contractor saw to sell on craiglist, and I was getting a ton of interest in the 250-300 range. That saw I bought as a lot of eight pieces for 400.
Tablesaw, bench grinder, drill press, jointer, dust collector, lathe, router and full size table, bandsaw)

So from my perspective I am getting a full shop including a unisaw with a great fence, and I'm only out 750. But I guess I should think of what else I could do with the 500.

If you can pull all that off, you'd be deserving of at least a minor you suck!

Is he willing to go for the deal at this point? What's his temperature?
