like majority of the post already have suggested, it all depends on what you are doing. the route that i took myself was the thickness planer, jointer/planer and then the DC. these three are what i would consider to be the most important after a TS. thats my two cents

    regards,

Well I may be in luck. I was talking to my BIL about his Delta Jointer and Delta Planer that he purchased for making beds for kids and finishing the basement (bar and built in entertainment center). Turns out he is done using them for the forseable future and said he would be willing to let me "store" them in my shop to get them out of his garage and into a more controlled climate. He only lives a few blocks from me so if he needed them for something he could just come over and use them or move them back if it was a larger project. If all goes well I'll post the pics and post in the gloat. With this accomplished I can spend my $$ on the HF DC + Nail gun/Compressor

I haven't confirmed but I think these are the models for the Jointer and Planer

Cool -- I had a deal like that for a while, but then the guy moved cross country and took all his tools with him....

I have to say I've found my air compressor to be very useful -- not just for the nailers, but for other stuff, too -- like adjusting tire pressure, inflating balls (sports), "dusting" (I often roll tools out into the driveway and blow them clean), blowing up balloons for parties, and inflating stuff for the kids, like beach balls, kiddie pools, a 6-foot T-Rex, and more -- stuff that would probably kill me if I tried to blow them up myself.

well, those will be nice tools.
              Changes the picture somewhat.
I assume you still want to spend $400, that's a major tool for most of us.
If you can ocassionally swing $100 than I would put an air compressor in a minor tool category, pick one up when you have $100 burning a hole in your pocket, pick up some brad nailer for $20 at HF on another day.

For a major item, now that you have a planer and jointer, get a DC likethe HF and get a Wynn cartridge filter or a Grizzly/jet PSI canister upgrade for it., will run about $350 total. Get some hoses and connect to the TS, joiner and planer.

One major benefit of having DC, your BIL will not be wanting to pull his items back to his house to use, he'd rather use then at your place!

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.
