Just got my Digital Protractor, how close to 90 do you get?

    Hello,
In the constant struggle of trying to get more accurate, I got a Denali digital protractor. So I am now trying to get my cross-cut sled to cut better. Do you get cuts at exactly 90.0 deg?

I works great, the only problem is now I see why my joints suck.
      Definitely worth the $30.

            Many thanks, BUT...

They say they can't ship this to Oz !@#$%&*!*

Strange - I've bought a lot of "stuff" from Amazon - CD's etc.

I've thought of purchasing one of those. My sled, which I've pictured here before, uses a moving fence that is similar to a JessEm sliding table. I have no problem setting it to 90 or 45 using a drafting triangle. And all I've used it for so far are 90's and 45's. However, I know I'm going to want to do some strange angle some day. I can use some trig and set it with a rule. But, it sure would be nice to be able to use a Dinali to check before cutting.

Anyone know how the accuracy compares with the starret? I know the starret isn't digital.

Man oh man am I going to go broke or what? Just went to HF Sunday, back again for more goodies I guess. Went for sandpaper and left with $180 worth of stuff. That place is starting to feel like Costco, in for milk and out $200 later.

Not necessarily. As an entire class, these protractor gadgets (both the digitals and the much-vaunted Starrett) are notoriously inaccurate ... maybe okay for carpentry, but not for fine woodworking. Read some of the amazon.com buyer reviews. Not encouraging. It could be that your joints are better than you think and it's the gauge that's off.

I did truth it with a known good square, and read 90.0, and 45.0. So it is at least this accurate.

                            Thanks Vanguard

Used the HF coupon for the buy. Reads 90 on a fixed square. Question is: Is the square, square? Checked a draftsman square and read 90.0. Looks good enough for me.

                              http://www.bt3central.com/showthread...denali+wixe y

I refer you to the above post I made last year where I tested the Wixey tilt indicator agaist the denali protractor and both against several drafting triangles.

The triangles were quite consistent leading me to believe they were correct. The Wixey, set to zero proceeded to measure +/-0.0° gainst all the standard angles (0, 30, 45, 60 and 90) while the Denali was off by 0 to -.1° (see the chart in the referenced post).

I then used the wixey and the denali against each other at a variety of in-between angles over 180° and plotted the difference. While there's no telling which was absolutely correct at any given angle they did track each other to better than 0.5°. I'm slightly inclined to believe the Wixey was better because of the protractor tests, but the difference curve, while small, is puzzling in its shape.

At no time did I see any errors anywhere as large as a degree. My measurement techniques are pretty good.

The denali with its digital readout and 0.1 degree resolution and observed accuracy, I am inclined to believe must be better than the starret with its small dial gauge marked in what appear to be degree increments - the resolution of reading cannot be much better than 0.5 degrees.
