It doesn't take long to change speeds and makes a world of difference as shown in my pics:

The tension is usually held by one or two thumbscrews, you release the tension, pull the motor forward a bit, then its real easy to slip the belt over the pulleys and walk them to the next pulley.
My new Hitachi has two belts and an idler. It has a lever to pull the motor forward so you don't even have to pull on the motor itself to release tension. The biggest hassle is it has 12 speeds and 12 pulley combinations, some require the front pulley on top and some require it on the bottom so once in a while you have to remove pulleys to swap their over-underness. But even that takes much less than a minute.
Usually takes about 15 seconds to change speeds if I don't have to swap the over and under belts.
